Section 1 – What is going on here?.
After a career of developing software, evaluating and reviewing software, and testing software, I am cleaning out my attic and basement. Though I am giving it all away “as is”, it all worked the last time I used it and I would rather it go to some one who could put it to use than go into the land fill. So, if you want it – it is yours, first come first served. ALMOST FREE if you pick it up or are close to me. Otherwise, let’s talk.

Step one was to give a lot of the stuff to schools, charities, museums, non-profits, etc.

Step two is to give whatever is left to friends, collectors, the general public, on Craig’s list, etc. This is where we are now and you have until May 5th 2006 before I move on to step 3.

Step three is to put what is left into recycling.

Do you really want any of this stuff?
YES If you need to replace something, set up something for homework, bookkeeping, games to keep
kids busy in day care, start a business, jump starting a refuge or someone who has lost everything,
or finally get that antique/museum exhibit working; then this is for you.
MAYBE If you want to teach programming, electronic repair, or just need examples to take apart, then this
may be for you.
MAYBE NOT If you want to try to sell it to raise money, I doubt this is for you.
NO If you want the latest and greatest, the fastest downloads, an ability to play high speed games, or
the capability to host a high capacity web presence, then this is not for you at all.

What do I mean by "ALMOST FREE"? It means I would still like to help out charities. So, take as much as you want. Then leave me a check made out to your favorite charity for whatever you think what you took is worth to you. If you don't have a favorite charity, here are some of mine:

Section 2 – How to read the listing
I have tried to list the hardware/software by topic, then by platform. Most of this is for the Mactintosh, but there is a lot of PC stuff, and some DEC, CDC, UNIX, etc. (In a very few cases, I just don’t remember.)
? There are four sections, the lot code (which is only so I can find what you ask for in my pile); the name/description; the platform/computer, and some cyptic codes to tell what is really in the lot (see the last bullet to interpret these).
? Anything in square braces ( [x] ) indicates that it is not an “original manufacturers” type item. This does not mean they are pirated items. Between being a beta tester, a software reviewer, two house floodings, one cross country move where about 20% of my stuff was stolen out of the warehouse, one divorce, and raising two youngsters who grew from toddlers through teenagers, it was hard to maintain all the originals. Plus there is shareware, things I wrote, things friends wrote that never made it to publication, cases like pre-7.0 Apple where you just brought in a floppy and the store copied the new system software on to it for you, cases where you had to send in your original disks to get the upgrade or another vendor’s similar product, and some just plain media failure where I had to recover to new disks. (Twenty-five years does that to some disks.)
? Some things are listed twice to make them easy to find, especially hardware. For instance, modems are listed both under Computers – Modems and under Communications – Modems and Terminal Software. If they have the same “lot code”, then there is only one lot.

No, I'm contacting you...Section #2 appears to br a pretty thourough overview of some of the problems encountered in using old mag media. Perhaps you could use some or all of it (with the author's permission), to be included in the FAQ/Guidelines/etc.??? It sure could answer a lot of common, repititious comments/questions.

My eyes, my eyes!! Section 3 has done me in..... and I am not kidding either. Eyes actually hurt after scanning that list quickly.
 
They might pain you even more when you realize it was prolly done in vain--this thread is 3 years old.
