Setup help

Probably a PC/XT compatible, in which case, no BIOS setup. If a '286, may need a floppy disk-based setup program (a lot of early machines did it that way).

Yeah, the time & date thing almost certainly indicates AT or newer <cuffing self upside the gourd for not noticing>. Most XTs (all?) would not fail to boot for that reason alone. Did you try booting from a floppy disk?

Boot from a bootable floppy disk with a generic setup program (GSETUP.EXE I think). You can set everything up then :)

You'll probably find the CMOS battery has gone flat and requires replacing, hence the computer has lost its settings.

Gee Mike, gotta get up pretty early in the afternoon to put one over on you, eh? :)

Nah, you can put one over on me pretty well any time, even after midnight (EST or EDT).

But although there probably is a BIOS problem it does look like it's reading the boot disk but just not liking what it finds (or doesn't). Definitely time to boot from floppy and investigate; could still be wrong HD params, but might also (or just) be the startup files.

They probably got blown off somewhere along the line. Possibly cross-linked files in the DOS directory. Chkdsk c: /f from the appropriate diskette might fix it and a re-install definately would.
