Hi everybody,

We're being hammered by spam. The moderators are trying to keep up. In the last few days somebody must have launched a smarter set of scripts because the uptick in crap has just been phenomenal.

Please be patient and please resist the urge to respond to the bogus threads. We are debating using the 'nuclear' option, which is to put all new users in a sandbox and moderate all of their posts until we think they are safe for the general public.

OMG, what a schitschtorm!

Please don't click on anything suspicious looking. I made the mistake and landed a$$-deep in kiddie pr0n. Try explaining that if your computer ever gets searched for any reason at all. (It's a Federal crime if they even find any traces left behind).

Crud, yep bunch more porn spam now. Does look like it will force some kind of time delay on new members.

I suppose it doesn't even matter to report those posts to moderators, as they come in so big numbers and are so blatantly obvious that even a half blind moderator will spot them a mile away once they log in to the forum.

As it has come to my attention (via ahm) that spammers these days set up special CAPTCHA breaking servers, and at a success rate at 15% are becoming faster and faster, one would suggest some alternative to CAPTCHA.

Here is a NoSpam! module for vBulletin 3.7.X, downloadable by licensed members which I presume at least Erik is?

Please review if this would be an option for the Vintage Computer Forum.

I'm on this, however slowly. :p

I've just set us up to use Akismet and further tweaked the human verification components. If that doesn't work I'll install NoSpam! and give it a shot.

Failing that new users will be placed on moderation until they have proven responsible citizens. . . :D

Thanks for your patience and please accept my apologies for the damn litter.

An apology is NOT required. We all hoped that no major changes would be required in the Spam war. Doesn't look like a realistic hope at this point.

Spammer on Aisle 2!!!

And with a name like "BarristerBanks" I'm 99.99% positive it's a Nigerian Spammer. Those 419 emails are the only place I've seen Barrister used.

I'm not sure exactly where to post these types of notices. I didn't see a "report this post" button on the thread.

RJ

Never mind... I'm blind and found the "report this post" button... Feel free to nuke this post...
