word processor

"Best" is a subjective and debatable term when it comes to Word Processors, but I would think Wordstar was pretty typical of the Era. From memory it doesn't have menus, but you can have a HELP section at the top of the screen which shows the key commands.

If the model had come out a little later, I would have said something like Word Perfect.

what would be the best word processor for me to put on my compaq portable plus i would perfer something menu driven

There are many good wordprocessors with menus:

Easy to learn but less features:

  • PFS:Write
  • Homeword
  • Bank Street Writer

Full-featured:

  • Microsoft Word for DOS (lotus-style menus up to 5.0, CUI-style menus 5.5 and 6.0)
  • Wordperfect 5.1 (I think) and later
  • Microsoft Works

For you specifically, I recommend Microsoft Word 5.5 because 1. it's free from Microsoft (they have the entire thing online as a "patch") and 2. it uses very familiar menus. You can get it and others here: http://www.vetusware.com/category/Office/?cat=4
