I wonder how easy it would be to set up.?

If rememeber right, it needs some hardware... just a modem, I think. It's supposed to be straightfoward.

I don’t own a modem for my C64 and haven’t seen one for a looooong time.

I wonder if it will work through an emulator?

Not sure... I guess you could try FleaBay and Craigslist... What type of plug does it use?

Groepaz has collected a number of Contiki retro releases which the current project page doesn't list:

All those are 1.2 or at best 1.3 releases. If you follow the link to Oliver Schmidt's homepage, he has managed to backport Contiki 2.1 to the Apple II. It isn't quite what you're asking for, but possibly the only 8-bit platform currently running modern Contiki.

By the way, I'm uncertain if Contiki supports modems and SLIP/PPP. It will support several Ethernet devices though, for direct TCP/IP.
