i want to build a 286 web server. i need some idea's for software and some help with hardware compatibility. i am using this motherboard http://www.alternativetech.net/th99/m/U-Z/32215.htm. i am using a wd90c31-lr video card, and i'm not sure what network card to use. i have only 3 isa network cards that i know work, D-Link DE-220p, 3C509-TP, and a NE 2000 i think.

The NE2000 would probably be the most compatible, or at least the easiest to find a DOS driver for.

The 3C509 is a more advanced card and does a lot of the processing in hardware, freeing up the CPU for other things.

Check out http://phoenix.anomic.net/. It's a 286 running Minix acting as a webserver.

i seen this and was not too sure about this card http://support.3com.com/infodeli/inotes/techtran/30fa_5ea.htm. i am not too sure about minix. i have only 1 mb of memory. the computer does not seem to take to more memory. my computer has a 115mb hard drive.

Some 6 years ago I ran a 386 file server with Dos 6.22, Win 3.11 WFWG and a generic NE 2000 isa card. That paticular card I recall is supported in the Win 3.11. Am I rignt on that support ?? It was definately the easiest card to set up.

a 286 and 386 are different. i could make a 386 server as easy as i can make a 486 server. my 286 would not even boot a win 95 boot disk but it will boot and install dr.dos.

Years ago I set up Minix on a 286 with 1 MB RAM, and it worked.
The biggest problem was to find a Minix-compatible ethernet adapter - 3c509 cards didn't work, and I had to find some NE2000 clone.
I didn't care to use it as a HTTP server, though. Only FTP and Telnet.

i would like to try minix but i know nothing about it and it looks complicted to install.

how do i extract the mnx files to floppy? can i do it with windows xp or do i have to use an older OS like win 98 or 3.1.

ok. i figured ou how to make the floppies. rawrite3 on windows 98 worked. the next problem i have run into is installing it. do i have to partition the drive any special way befor i install minix? is there a simple way to partition it? i have 115mb drive. some of the stuff i have been read has not helped. i will see about taking a pictur o the screen i get stuck at.

here it is http://486.ath.cx:82. i hope the link works. it is currently running off the 3 1/2" floppy. what would better 3 1/2" or 5 1/4"? i might try the 5 1/4" sometime tomoro. i tried it using the hard drive and it was a bit quicker but not worth the extra noise and power consumption.

OT: To those who want to try Minix. I've run it recently and the current version (3.1.5) is very different from the older Minix 1 or 2. It is now on it's way to becoming a serious OS, albeit rather slowly. Andrew Tanenbaum recently got some grant money so hopefully things will speed up a little. The goal, apart from using a microkernel suitable for embedded systems, is to get stability that will allow the OS to have longer lasting reliability than the device it is running on. There are a lot (650) of programs ported already and it has a full X server and drivers for several common ethernet chips. Minix3 does, however, require a pentium. The CD will also run live. Check out the homepage. /shameless plug
