I have seen numerous cpu boards and video cards die due to bad chips. Like the cyberstorm and blizzard PPC amiga boards. I wanted to know, how hard and expensive is it to replace a bga package, minus parts. I've seen rework stations on ebay for as little as $400. would these be suitable for replacing G3 components and below?

Mostly, a good eye, practice and steady hands seem to be requisites. Look up "BGA Rework" and "BGA Reball" on YouTube for examples.

I have neither steady hands nor a good eye. :sigh:

We have BGA rework equipment at my job. I'd say without it it's well outside the capability of a DIYer, and that's hard for a person like me to say. ;)

If you're reballing parts, forget it. They can cost quite a bit to get someone to do... like several hundred dollars a chip. If you can get NOS parts, this is probably cheaper than trying to rob peter to pay paul.
