Hello,

I'll try to make the story short. Basically, I have dismantled my Toshiba T1200XE laptop. I have had it inside a wardrobe gathering dust for about 20 years and now wanted to recover data (doc files basically). The laptop does not boot anymore and the screen is faulty and nothing is displayed anymore (no matter bright-contrast).

This are some photos I've just taken:

So I've removed the hard disc drive in an attempt to recover data by plugging it into another computer.

I've found the specs at:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/dta/42876/

And then also at:
http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/hard-drives-hdd/conner/CP-2024AT-21MB-2-5-SSL-IDE-AT.html
http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/hard-drives-hdd/conner/CP-2024XT-21MB-2-5-SSL-IDE-XT.html

The only way to plug it would be by means of the 44-pin device connector but would that be safe? Or would I just fry the 20Mb drive? I don't know if that drive is FAT8, FAT16... so I'm a bit lost to say the least...

I'd appreciate any kind of support and will provide feedback.

Greetings,

EDIT: I've found the following specs related PRECISELY to my model CP-2024 KATO, as shown in the photos. So it's an IDE interface.

Hello,

I apreciate your and anyone's support.

The IOMAX model is not distributed by local retailers. However, I've found:

Adapter USB 2.0 to 2,5 and 3,5 inch HDD LogiLink®
http://www.logilink.org/showproduct/AU0005A.htm

Adapter USB 2.0 to 2,5 + 3,5 Zoll IDE + SATA HDD OTB LogiLink®
http://www.logilink.org/showproduct/AU0006C.htm

which I think also serve the purpose. The first one does not support SATA but what's the matter anyway since this hard disk is IDE.

However, the pdf brouchure refers to "your IDE ATAPI hard disk drive". I think the T1200XE is from 1990 to be precise and whereas the Conner CP-2024 is IDE, I do not know whether ATAPI was even a standard back then.

I've read in the web about supposed incomptability of this "old" hard discs when plugged to a today's PC, maybe due to the ATAPI issue? Someone also plugged it directly to the PC motherboard but the BIOS would "see" the hard disk as 20Mb but as 2Gb. Unfortunately, my PC motherboard does not have a 2.5" 44-pin IDE slot. Just one 3.5" 40-pin IDE slot.

If this USB2IDE connector worked, that'd just make it! The Conner CP-2024 device connector is indeed 2,5" IDE 44-pin.

Thank you,

Your local computer shop should have a 2.5" 44-pin to 3.5" 40-pin adapter; might be worth a try.

I have a T1200XE and can confirm that the hard drive is IDE, nothing special. It should work plugged into any IDE adapter. The USB adapters you listed support both IDE and ATAPI. ATAPI is an extension of IDE for CD-ROMs and tape drives, it is not used for hard drives.

the drive is XT IDE, it won't work with a normal IDE adapter!!!! (XT IDE = 8 bit data bus, IDE = 16 bit data bus) Try finding a PC with XT IDE controller

Have you actually tried it? It is an XT/AT drive. The T1200XE is a 286 and uses the AT mode.

I hate to drop a bombshell, but most IDE drives under 1 gb refuse to work with any usb-ide adapter, in my experience anyway, i think your best bet would be to directly plug it into your computer via a direct ide port on your main machine, or an older machine with ide. If you can get one to work with an ide drive of that vintage, send me the link to the one that does :)
