Crazier as we go

Well, seems as if you've found someone selling it for the (sigh) normal price of what sellers think it's worth. The "Make Offer" button won't work for this auction., even if you attempt at it's feature.

Egads. And to think I have one of these PC-DOS 2.1 disk and manual boxes out in the garage (actually I might have two). Who would have thought it would be worth more than my Lisa.!

Tez

OMG. That is insane. I got IBM DOS 2.1, BASIC manual, Guide To Operations PC XT, and Hardware and Technical Reference PC XT all for $79 in original binder sleeves to go with my PC XT. God, my IBM XT must be worth a lot with all the documentation and a MACH 20 and the original InPort mouse and the original keyboard... I wouldn't sell it in a million years, though! :D

As my boss says, "it only takes one" - usually in reference to quoting a million dollars for jobs as a joke, but still applies here. Guess that's what they're waiting for - that millionaire who doesn't do his research.

I found a company (can't remember it now, bugger it) that has these for normal people prices off the shelf - from PC DOS 1.1 to Windows 98. What they have available and quality varies but they specialised in it.

Must be one of the ones that came off the printing press on 23OCT83. Only three were produced that day due to printing press failure. Extremely rare. This is probably the last surving one of the three. A steal at $4,000. The seller must be in a hurry to sell it. :)

Well then, why doesn't the seller mention that? If I was browsing Ebay, I wouldn't even look at that. I would just pass it by uneventfully. If the seller had something like "Last of it's kind" in the title, I might at least stop to admire it.

Not to mention that the same faulty printer also mislabelled the disks calling them MS-DOS not PC-DOS. Even rarer! Heck probably the only one! What an investment! :D

Meh. I don't think old software is worth even the sticker price. It's available for download from a number of sources for free and more powerful modern options are available for much less. It's nice to have documents and of course fogies like us are interested, but it's also used. Used stuff has already lived out it's sticker value. I wouldn't buy even high end software from 20 years ago for more than $10.

Yeah you're not really buying whats on the disks, its about owning a piece of history.

In saying that, $4000 still feels rather insane for an item that was mass produced only ~25 years ago.

I guess I agree with SpidersWeb. I think it's also good to buy older software if you have something that it will add to or make more valuable.

"Yeah you're not really buying whats on the disks, its about owning a piece of history. "

I understand that. But considering the software is useless and the disks probably not working you're really just buying books. And old books usually aren't valuable just because they're old.

I think it's a crap shoot as to whether those disks will work or not. I just bought a box of sealed Verbatim 5.25s and a few of them were bad. These things do go bad after awhile even when not in use.

What really kills me is that no one allows these items to go at actual market value. I've been looking around for a black floppy drive for a little while. They sit around with either a BIN or initial auction price of $30-$70. A quick "completed auction" search tells you they aren't worth more than $15 to anyone. Start an auction at a dollar. It'll sell for what it sells for.
