MicroPDP-11 - some questions

Quite a few, yes; I've gotten a stack of them with just about every C64 I've rescued, and hung onto the ones that weren't legit game disks that would increase the resale value ;)

Lesson for the day: if you are writing a floppy disk with an unusual drive geometry via a special utility, and attempt to write to it a disk image residing on another, ordinary-geometry floppy disk connected to the same disk controller, you are likely to spend much longer than you really care to admit trying to figure out why you keep getting read and write errors :/

On the bright side, PUTR does work, and the PDP-11 now has a copy of DUMP available, so I should be able to set it backing up the hard drive pretty soon.

However, I'm having a heck of a time getting DUMP to work. For starters, the (outfile)=(infile)/option syntax doesn't seem to work at all (claims "invalid command.") DUMP/TERMINAL looks like a workable alternate syntax, but it claims "input error" no matter what file or device I tell it. Am I missing something here?

Probably best if you post the exact command you're attempting, or better a capture of the entire session from boot.

The command I'm trying is "DUMP TT:=LANG.TXT/X" (trying to get a Radix-50 dump of a small test file.) This results in the "invalid command" error message. "DUMP/TERMINAL/RAD50 LANG.TXT" doesn't give the "invalid command" message, but it gives the "input error" message instead. Neither get so far as to actually dump anything. The same thing happens when I specify a device instead of a file as the input.

I'm not the best RT guy, and I have to guess how you booted because you didn't post the session capture, but....

Try:

  • "R DUMP"
  • Prompt should change to "*". If error, it didn't find DUMP.
  • "LANG.TXT/X/S:1"

Note: LANG.TXT would need to be in your default directory.

Octal Disk dump [if you boot DU0:] might be:

  • "DU0:/N/W/S:0"
  • "^C" to stop it.

Okay, even after looking through the RT-11 manual I can't see what I'm doing wrong, but it keeps coming up with the same errors. Here's a transcript, from boot through a last directory listing. As you can see, DUMP.SAV is present and will run, but won't actually dump anything...

I don't see LANG.TXT in that directory listing. Should it be? I am not much with RT-11. The error message description that the RT-11 doc has for
this error isn't very useful, but I will paste it here.

?KMON–F–Input error <dev:filnam.typ>
Explanation:
1. An input error occurred while the file specified in an R, RUN, GET, FRUN,
or SRUN command was being read.
2. An error occurred while block 0 of the handler file was being read during the
INSTALL command.
3. An error occurred during the execution of a SET command for a handler.
User Action: See the procedures for recovery from hard error conditions listed in
Chapter 2.

On my RT11 V5.1 system DUMP.SAV is 9 blocks, not 5 blocks. The command:

DUMP/TERM DUMP.SAV

works just fine. My guess is your disk (or its directory) has some corruption.

No, it's there, and it can be read by other commands (i.e. TYPE LANG.TXT.) So can DU0:, for that matter: COPY DU0: TT: reads and dumps the hard disk contents on the terminal perfectly fine. The problem seems to be with DUMP, but I'm not sure what the problem is. It seems to load far enough that it can prompt for an input file if one isn't supplied, but it fails after that.

About the only thing I can think of is that I got this copy of DUMP.SAV from the SIMH RT-11 v5.3 disk image, and maybe it doesn't get along with earlier versions of the OS; unfortunately, I don't have a copy of RT-11 v5.01, and I don't know where to get one.

Oh, hey, you're absolutely right. Guess PUTR didn't copy it correctly. I'll give it another try.

Edit: *FACEPALM*

I forgot to set the copy mode to binary, even after reading about it in the PUTR documentation...it now works.

Indeed :D

Interesting new lead on the one card; I looked on the back of the PCB, and there's a little Bell logo. Poking around on Google, I see some discussion of Southwestern Bell equipment with CST-xxxx part numbers, so I'm suspecting it's actually a Bell part, which means it's probably telecom equipment after all. I'll have to drop 'em a line and see what I can find out.

Well! Major score at the recycle center today! Spotted a "MicroVIP" by some company with a name like "American Data Systems" or something. It looked suspiciously like a MicroPDP-11, so I opened it up for a look - indeed it was. The owner said that it came from the EPA, who wanted it destroyed, but decided that I could at least salvage the cards from it.

What a haul. For starters, it's got a KDJ11-AA (LSI-11/73 with an 8KB cache) and accompanying M7195 serial/ROM/128KB RAM board. That alone would be a find, but in addition, there's a pair of 2MB DataRAM memory cards, an LP-11 printer card (is this Centronics? It uses a Centronics-style connector,) and two controller cards that I can't identify (one of which appears to be a Winchester + SCSI controller.)

Only problem is, now I have to run back there tomorrow to see if I can get the backplane, because I don't know if the one in my MicroPDP-11 is 22-bit or not (the CPU is, though.) Crossing my fingers...

All BA23s have Q22 backplanes. Yes, you did good there. Even if the rest is gone, you got the best parts.

As for the two cards you can't identify, just tell us what is on the handles or any model number stickers and we can tell you what they are. If one is a SCSI controller after all, you hit the jackpot.

Lou

Yeah, it looked from what I could find like mine was a Q22, I just wasn't sure. I'll still probably go back for the backplane, though, since one of the two controller cards has a supplemental card over the drive cage that I didn't grab (I was running short on time before I had to be at work.) Luckily, I got them to set it aside for me and not scrap it immediately, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Nothing is written on the handles of either, they're the metal levers and not the plastic knobs. The first card is marked "RTI-Q BUS BD., ASSY NO. 70001-61280 REV N," but the back side says "PART NO. 70001-21280 REV. G." It's constructed entirely of 74-series logic and PROMs, and has a 10-wire and a 20-wire ribbon cable going out to a back-panel DB-25 male connector, the PCB for which is labeled "DS ICIS LINK CONN., ASSY NO. 70001-61450 REV A." The 10-wire ribbon is labeled "P2 TO MXV-11 (DSTA)." There's also six of some kind of apparently single-contact plug connector (circular, about 3/16", in a square block; never seen this type before so I have no idea what it's called,) arranged in in/out pairs between the two cables.

The second card, the one that I suspect is a SCSI controller, has a USDC logo on the PCB. The front side is marked "10-1108-04 ASSY, S/N 74089, REV C" - all the italicized digits being scratched in by hand on a little metal area reserved for hand-labelling. The back is marked "36-1108-03 REV. B," with none of it silk-screened at all - it appears to have been stamped or stencilled on with white paint. This one's also mostly 7400 logic and PLAs, but does have an Intel 8086-2 and a matching 8259 PIC, 4KB SRAM, a couple of EPROMs, and an AMD AM9517 DMA controller. It has a 50-pin ribbon connector that goes to that supplemental card I mentioned.

I did a little looking around on my own this afternoon and didn't find anything, but if there's anywhere that's a better resource than Google, it's here ;)

Please snag the BA23 RQDXn signal distribution board also. I think it's screwed to the back of the backplane, so it will probably come anyway. Also be sure to snag the power supply. No print sets have ever turned up for this power supply and you definately want to have a spare.

The first board sounds like some kind of bus interface to some other equipment. It will probably be a good future source for 7400 logic for repairing other stuff. If it used DC0xx bus interface ICS, they will definately be useful for some future repair.

The second board sounds very interesting. I do not recognize "USDC" or any of the other numbers. However, this is very likely an MSCP controller. Get the supplimental card and tell us what you see on there. The fact that the supplimental card is mounted by the drives is a good sign. I'd love to know what other connections are on the supplimental card.

Lou

Yeah, I'll get all the boards. I don't know if they'll let me have the power supply, considering the EPA thing, but I'll try.

USDC, from what I gathered on Google, made a few disk/tape controllers with similar model numbers, but I couldn't find anything for that specific model number. It was hooked to a tape drive, though, so I'm guessing it's one of theirs. From what I recall off the top of my head, the supplemental card had connections to an ST-506 hard disk and the tape drive, which had a single very wide connector that I think may have been SCSI? I dunno. It also connected to the machine's front panel directly, so I kind of wonder if the supplemental card isn't a full-on replacement for the BA-23 signal distribution board. There was also another serial port connector that went to either the front panel or the supplemental card, can't remember which.

I'll try to grab as much of it as they'll let me tomorrow, but I'm not sure how much I'll get away with. Guess we'll see.

By the way, any idea if the ROMs for the CPU will boot from my RQDX1 as-is?
