BERG headers on edge connectors

My pertec tape drives use 50 pin edge connectors for their data cables. I can buy the proper connectors for ribbon cables but they are extremely expensive. For a fraction of the price I could buy BERG headers and connectors and use that if I soldered the headers directly to the edge connectors but is that a good idea and is there a reason they are edge connectors? Once they're soldered on you can't get the solder off the gold fingers.

IDC 50 position x2 0.100 spacing?

2 for $10 + $3 shipping to the US doesn't seem expensive.

Shipping to Canada, well, that's another story.

Have you given Lee's or Sphere a call? They both claim to stock IDC connectors.

I picked up some from amazon for cheap.

Search for 50 pin IDC connector.
