Bought a PET some...2 years ago, and it worked fine then when i got it and then i put it in storage (indoors in dry and warm temps) and yesterday i suddenly got aurge to take it out and load a PET game i found on a tape, but to my horror all i got when i started it was this:

Faulty chip or something else?

Yep, faulty chip or something else.

Most likely bad SRAM. But, it could be the CPU, the 555, or something else.

Leave it turned on for a while and it might come to life on its own, maybe.

Sort of. Some SRAM chips come back to life on their own.

If I leave my 2001N off for too long, the first time I turn it on, I get this:

Then, I leave it on for a while, and reset, and get this:

So, I leave it on for a while, and reset, and get this:

One more time, and this:

It happens all the time. But, my SRAMs were all replaced a year ago. Yours might be original, and might not recover.

First thing I'd try is to move all the socketed chips back and forth in their sockets; those sockets are notoriously flaky.

Next you'll probably have some intermittent keys...

Sounds like the same experience I went through with my PET 2001-8. I have whole thread here in what I ended up doing to solve my problem.
I started here......
1.
2. A lot of help from MikeS, Eudi, Gubbish, Donni to name a few.

I also had fun building / get / buy to have the final solution.
A). PETTester (thanks to Eudi for an optimized eprom program )
B). Set of Donni's ROM/RAM boards (thanks to Thomas)
C). PETVET from Gubbish (bitfixer)
And a set of CURSORs PET program files from MikeS to use with my PETDisk.

Hopefully just reseating the SRAMs ( or ROMs) will solve your problem but if you ended up like me ( my PET had a Skyle's ROM sets which tested bad) ... can no longer replace with original ROM set, had to use Donni's. I eventually opted to use PETVet in the end.

As is pulling them out completely or just "shake" them? i have pushed all of them and a few made a little click noise.
