8087 coprocessor. Heat question

I installed a 8087 coprocessor into my 5160. Changed the dip switch. Boots. No error.

However, after running it for 10 minutes, it is very hot to the touch. Is this normal. The 8086 processor is hot too, but the 8087 is hotter.
 
Yes, they do get quite warm.

Did you close the case up? Everything outside the PSU runs cooler when the case is completely closed.
 
No. The case is open. Can I safely assume that it is working as designed I it gives no error and hasn't blown up after 10 minutes? Is there a diagnostics or some other test I can run too verify the coprocessor is working?
 
The 8086 processor is hot too, but the 8087 is hotter.

The 8087 IIRC in fact has more transistors than even the 8088, and has a more specialized, power-intensive job. This is very normal. I've been running my PC with an 8087 for over 3 years without issue.
 
The heat is one of the reasons that the 8087 comes in cerDIP and not plastic packaging. If you are really nervous, there are 40-DIP heatsinks available. The old SIMTEL20 library should have a few 8087 tests.
 
Install a small copper heatsink can simply solve the problem.
