Decided to install Norton Utilities for Windows 95 today on my 386. As a prerequisite, you need a qualifying program, such as Norton Desktop Utilities for DOS 1.0, which I have and installed same with no issues. I have two complete sets of NU for W95 and am having a problem with the install on Setup Disk #3. The disk won't unpack from either set. I wondering if anyone has run into a similar problem with while attempting to setup NU for W95? Disk 3 is loaded with DLL's and it would be a real PITA to have to install all of those files manually. I'll do what ever it takes, but I sure would like to get to the bottom of the unpack problem.

FWIW, I have *two* sets of ~8 disks each of that program and all of the disks are bad and have been for almost ten years! :)

When I think about, that may be a reason that it was setting on the shelf in pristine condition. I don't think I ever got it up and going back in the day. I would like to get it to install just because. However, I have a ton of other stuff like PC Tools, etc., that I can make do with.

Are the disks themselves readable? Depending on the setup program and if you have enough hard disk space, you might be able to copy the contents of the disk in to a single folder and run setup from there.

Also, which version of Norton Utilities for Win95 is this? 1.0? 2.0? (There is a similar Norton Utilities for Windows 95 2.0 upgrade floating around if that could help compare/fix the files) Normally, I recommend Norton Utilities 2001 which is the last to support 95, but that might not work well on a 386 :)

The disks, computer, HD, space, etc. are all fine. It's Norton Utilities for Windows 95 period - no version number. My previous post indicated that it would not unpack after disk #2 - disk #3 is readable but the unpack routine is flawed. There is a bug in the setup. I'm looking for the easy fix. Thanks for taking the time to respond. BTW, total of 8 GB in four 2 GB partitions (ONTRACK Dynamic Drive Overlay V9.57 © 1993-2002).

Easy fix: find the slightly later version that was on CD.

Are you using the NU installer or trying to uncompress the files directly? I vaguely remember that Norton used its own compression routines that don't match the routines in Win95.

It's the 3-disk set on 1.44 floppy's. I don't think it was ever released on CD - may be wrong about that. 1st & 2nd disks install okay via Norton, 3rd disk won't unpack. I may try to expand the files on the 3rd disk manually and see what happens. Weird that 2 different program sets have the same problem.

Hi Agent Orange,

I have that NU for Win95. Its on three 3.5" HD floppy disks, as prerequisite one needs to have disks for some older NU, and it's the 1'st version for Win95. Files are dated 8/3/95. I think we are talking about the same thing?
I have installed it once, and there were no problems with the installation. At some point I had to put in the 1'st disk of NU 6.01 for DOS, when the installer software asked proof, that I was eligible for update.

BTW, NU for Win95 Version 1 was also available on CD-ROM. I have it on this computer. It's files are dated 2/15/96. Version 2.0 is different thing, it supports FAT32, has some other added features too(I think), and its clearly marked V 2.0.

Run a Disk Test on the third disk(s). You may find (as I did) that the disks, themselves, are hosed, and if that's the case nothing will unpack them because the oxide coating on the surface is shot. Do these third disks foul your floppy drive when you try to read them? If so, they're definitely shot and nothing will recover them. If they don't foul the drive's heads when you run them you should be able to get to the data on them somehow.

The drive is okay. I downloaded the whole package from VetusWare with the same results on disk #3. I'll fire up my DOS laptop and see what happens. In the meantime, I going ahead and installing version 3 off of a CD.

That is just weird. Looking at the one from Vetusware, all of the files that end in "$" are actually PKZIP files. Testing them using pkzip, the files NUDESK.HL$ (NUDESK.HLP) on disk 2 and SYSINFO.VX$ (SYSINFO.VXD) on disk 3 have CRC errors, but extract anyway.

Are the files on your original disks identical to these?
Are these the same or different files that give you errors on your original disks?

The files will extract anyway, but SYSINFO.VXD extracts to the wrong size, and is presumably corrupt.

They really shipped corrupted disks to everyone? :confused6:

I only used disk #3 from Vetusware and it turns out that the file set is on their disk #3 is 26.5K larger than the OEM set. I think I figured out why. Who ever compacted the Vetusware disks didn't adhere to the OEM order, just took into consideration of how to cram all the files onto 3 disks. Anyway, the Vetusware disk #3 died about half way though the install. So, that's going to be another project to figure out what the heck is going on. I had a CD .img of version 3 and it turned out to be in German. I think the easiest way will be to expand all of the files and put them on a CD. The only problem with that is that you are dealing with 2 directories: c:\Program Files\Norton Utilities\Symantec & c:\Program Files\Norton Utilities\Shared. If someone has Norton Utilities for Window 95 (no version number on the disks) installed and running, it would be nice to see a file listing. BTW, I didn't get any 'errors' using the OEM disks, just wouldn't expand disk #3.

Hi,

I can post here a directory listing of my Win95 computers NU directories, it has NU for Win95 v.1 CD-ROM version installed and running.
But if you prefer the version1 from floppies, would you have liked to have disk image of that #3 floppy?

Hi,
Here are directory listings of my Norton Utilities for Win 95 V.1 installation. BTW, I have three directories, C:\program files\Norton utilities\System and C:\program files\Symantec.
