For Sale: spotted on Craigslist (continuous sightings)

Radio Shack Model 4 in Portland Oregon USA

Not mine, but I saw the computer in person from the seller when I was buying something else; I was tempted but decided I didn't need it. Guy was pretty nice and had not much of an idea of what it was, so I took photos for him and sent the photos to him along with a brief description of what it was and what it was going for on ebay. If you go see it, bang on the front door until the dogs bark, that will let him know you're there. He's probably flexible on the price.

Didn't attempt to power on, but he said it was his father's work computer until it was replaced by a PC in early 90's (iirc) and since then sat in a basement with the dust cover over it. Physical condition is very good, the white plastic is still white, no scratches, keys look good, etc.

I took photos on my phone and sent to him, but looks like craigslist really compressed them, here's a link to the larger originals (same photos I gave to the guy to use in his post):

Could be, but power supplies, including 5170s can very often survive not having a dummy load.

True. It could simply be the donor removed the HDD to protect "important" information. However, given the absolute barebones nature of the machine (one floppy, MDA controller and 5151 monitor) I am left wondering if this could be the ultimate in low end 5170s...

That's very likely the case--I've had owners remove hard drives before a sale, even after I offered to LLF the drive for them. What's odd, is that few people who have floppies and tapes converted ever want them returned. But those hard drives...

Probably due to the influence of the popular press. What I really want to ask these people is "Unless you're running the local chapter of the mafia, who gives a damn about what you have on your hard disk?" I certainly don't.

I've tried to contact that seller a number of times, but have not gotten a reply. I don't know what the problem is. Same person who had that lot of Apple II/Mac hardware a while back.

its a shame too because most of those hard drives were either proprietary or RLL / MFM and hard to find. Especially in XT's. I realize there is XT-IDE-CF project but I'm really not willing to solder or spend $70+ for the kit. Thats kind of a rip off. I usually tell people this when they balk at me taking the HDD. I explain that these HDDs are no longer made, they are rare, and that my interest is in keeping the computer original. 90% of the time Im sucessful.
