THE TRUTH

The human race was wiped out in 532 BC by a mass extinction event.

In a galaxy far far away, an alien species was curious to see what would happen had the human race survived. So, on one of their super computers, they set up a virtual Earth. That's right - you, me, everyone, is a virtual human. We all interact with each other and we interact with our perfectly programmed virtual environment. All of our senses are virtual, programmed down to the very last detail.

Some of you will take that as bad news. I don't know why. Does it really matter whether you are physical or virtual? Had you not have learned of all of this, you would have gone on with your (virtual) life, none the wiser.

But there is definite bad news. The aliens have firmly concluded that we are unsustainably consuming our virtual Earth, and because it has been going on for so long, that the supposed survival instinct in humans is clearly flawed. Personally, I thought they would have learned that long ago from past observation of Easter Island.

Anyhow, we are now considered by the aliens to be a 'dead end' species. The super computer that hosts virtual Earth can be put to a more productive use. The only thing that is stopping the 'plug being pulled' right now is an alien concern. The extremely high rate at which we are consuming our virtual Earth suggests to the aliens that we virtual humans know that our Earth is virtual and thus can be easily recreated. This is a major concern for the aliens, because such knowledge could only have been gained if we virtual humans had hacked through the virtual layer into the physical host - an extremely serious security breach.

So, how do I know all this? Never underestimate the ability of a professional hacker (or a compulsive liar).

Aliens from the planet Maxis?

Somebody just needs to tell the mayor we need to build more rivers and dams and we will have all the free energy we need, before the oceans boil off.

And for my next trick, I'll destroy the universe by flooding all the daises and causing a divide by zero.

Aliens from the planet Maxis?
No. They will be just another virtual species, living on some virtual planet within the virtual universe (network).

I will not name the host alien species. To do so would 'give the game away'. The host aliens would then know for sure that I've successfully hacked the virtual layer. For now (as they read these posts), I'm stringing them along, giving us more time.

When will programmers (human, alien, whatever) ever learn! Code will never be hackproof. 'Detect and deflect' will always be in the defence arsenal. To hack where I've hacked, you need to 'think outside the virtual'.

I'll destroy the universe by flooding all the daises and causing a divide by zero.
Divide by zero! Are you for real? Think about where their computer technology is the timeline of computer evolution. Their computers make ours look like abacuses (broken ones). Their computers are so advanced and powerful that the CPU will actually execute a 'divide by zero' and give you a valid result.

Think about it.
Because you live on a virtual Earth, when you run a VM on a physical machine, you are actually running a VM within a VM.
That then leads to a question.
What if our host alien species are themselves a virtual species hosted by another species.
Just how many nested VMs are there?
I'll find out. I'm pretty sure that it's something my employer will want to know.

I believe 42 is the answer.
It will be quite a while before I have the answer. It takes quite a lot of effort to OEPTEC (observe, evaluate, probe, time, execute, clean) without detection. And as I go up the VM chain, each host species will be more intelligent than the previous. Even with my IQ of 666, this is not going to be 'a walk in the VM park'.

I'm sorry, but when I do find the answer, my employer will most likely classify it. My response to your 42 is probably going to be, "We mice can neither confirm nor deny".

I know that people will have questions. Pre-empting those, a short Q&A follows.
Of course, I can't give too much away; certainly nothing that proves to the host species that I breached the virtual layer.

Q. I don't believe any of this. Prove to me that I'm a VH (virtual human) in a VM.

Sorry. I won't reveal a method of proof. Although relatively easy to prove, if everyone knew that they are a VH, we'd have 'panic in the streets'. It's the same reason why the governments of the world are doing their best to hide UFOs and aliens from us.

Although not proof: Think about how many times that you have said to yourself, "No. That's not possible." Well, it isn't possible in a real environment, but it is in a virtual environment.

Q. Einstein famously said, "God doesn't play dice". As a physicist, I want to know if there any evidence in the host physical machine that supports that?

I have to be careful here. Let me just say that I think Albert knew more than he let on. As a purely hypothetical example, if I were to (hypothetically) build a highly advanced super computer (say, the type that a host alien species might hypothetically build for VM hosting), then I might (hypothetically) name one of the devices that has no random features whatsoever as the Grid Obfuscation Device (GOD).

Q. As a computer security consultant, I want to know, what are kind of security mistakes that the host species are making?

Strikingly similar to the ones that we make. Examples: Leaving the keys to the parked UFO under its on-ramp. Using the same password for all super computers. Easy-to-guess passwords/paraphrases, such as "puny humans".

Q. How does the host species reproduce?

I did encounter some alien porn hidden in the home drive of one of the user accounts that I compromised. All I will say is that the nightmares will haunt me to my dying day (my terminal VH process time).
