    Old style mouse connector

These converters only work with some mice of that era, so a bit hit and miss.

    Sizzling Model 1 monitor

The sizzle is common for CRT's, usually caused by a combination of dust/dirt build up and moisture. The static charge attracts the particles, and when a bit of moisture builds up, sizzle, which lessens when it has run for a while and dried out. Discharge from point A to the metal band on the...

Shiva / Spider Atom Terminal Server help needed

I worked with their VPN and T2 modem gateways back in the 2000's, but not on these. Searching the internet is not what it used to be, and the web archive doesn't always include downloadable stuff. I did find password reset info, but no manuals for a ShivaPort. I'd suggest just trying to...

Shiva / Spider Atom Terminal Server help needed

There is some info about. see also Spiderport, and Shiva was later bought out by Intel. They will connect a telnet session, usually to a specific port number, to one of the serial ports.

How can we preserve more software and documentation?

Internet Archive takes a high quality scan and reduces it's resolution to save space, so doesn't preserve that well, but better than nothing. I did try OCR'ing old manuals, but there was a huge amount of post scan work cleaning it up. Maybe the so called 'AI' has a use if it could do he task well?

AI - What might people like us use it for?

I have wondered, given AI is created mainly from the stuff on the web where an ever increasing amount of information is just garbage, where will this take AI to in the future? I suppose if you feed enough garbale in, eventually something worthwhile may pop out.

US plug, IEC Male, Data-centers, kettle plugs and kettles.

In my experience here in NZ, the common datacentre in rack power rails would be C14, often with a C20 socket, depending on model and brand. A securing device at the power rail end is much less common, probably due to the price premium. Very easy to have one fall out, and some don't take much of...

Can you identify this weird old game?

XP will allow multiple languages to be installed. I had one with English, Korean, Japanese and Chinese all added - a side effect of hosting International students, and you can easily switch between them. Never tried this with older windows, but probably not supported.

Can you identify this weird old game?

From many years ago, a tip for installing windows in other languages - install english (or your native language) on a second PC at the same time and in step. Screen's are then the same, except for the text, which can make it easier.

    Magnetic tape loop RAM?

I have seen a magnetic drum with a moving "tape head" to play pre-recorded messages for a talking clock, so the drums do exist.

    Ultimate Geek Vacuum Cleaner Thread

They are old, but still "suck" so my goto for both the house and garage are older Dyson DC05's, with washable filters. It can suck up plaster dust and rubbish in the workshop and then just clean out & swap the filters - I have a pile of spares. Even 3d print some replacement bits

    cromemco z2d caps replacement

Reformatted them too, as replacements were not easy to obtain. I ran through the reformat process, then verified they met the origional capacitance and leakage spec (if you can track down an origional datasheet). The "normal" leakage can be quite high on some of these. I've not ever...

    USB-RS232 converter/adapter

My personal collection has about 5 different brands. I have had "reasonable" success with blue ones that have a long usb cable as shown in norwestrzh's post above, usually at a maximum of 38400 baud, but sometimes faster. Mine were salvage from a NAS (or three), where they were used to talk to a...

    USB-RS232 converter/adapter

In my experience (since WinXP days), getting reliable serial via USB is a nightmare, especially when reliability is key, for example when uploading firmware or a large configuration over serial. I have had this headache since laptops stopped having a real serial port, since I needed to use...

    Alphaserver 1200

A large bubble and pallet wrapped box was unpacked from my collection and an Alphaserver 1200 is the latest item to see daylight since moving some years ago. I aquired it when it was retired, and was one of many "vintage" systems I had kept running for DR recovery use many years ago. Most were...

Life of a Vintage Computer in Oceania

Times are getting tougher down this end of the world. The choices have shrunk again as my local South Island Components has gone. Not touching Element14 again either. They use DHL who just plain lose stuff and you are then left out of pocket, as Element14 don't care either. Looks like my...

    Qume Terminal membrane keyboard repair

I'm not familiar with this model, but does it have a setup menu? Possibly, being a terminal, typed characters would not be seen locally unless it is configured with local echo on.
