PSU recapping - what's the general consensus on when to do it?

It's getting to the point where I recap anything vintage that's still working whenever I open the power supply for any reason -- to blow out dust or change a fan, even! I've caught so many caps juuuuust starting to leak. The biggest effort is getting the supply out and open anyway!

July 2024 eBay QBus Lot Repair Thread

I've got some DEC PMI RAM boards with bad DRAMs from that lot, if you're interested -- they come up and function enough to load XXDP and find faults!

    DEC units on ebay

Me. I got stuck with a pile of it :P I have gone through a bunch of it: https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/july-2024-ebay-qbus-lot-repair-thread.1249049/

DEC stuff from an estate and don't know where to begin

Every time you think it's starting to thin out, another pile shows up! Yeah and Dave can probably tell you offhand what they already have! That or a low price bulk sale, I know a few hobbyists in that part of OH, if I wasn't swamped I'd consider it myself. Is there $10K of stuff there...

Clearpoint QED1 4MB Qbus PMI Memory

The docs also mention this being an ECC chipset Clearpoint came up with, kind of suggesting it was used, or planned to be used, in other products. Perhaps there's something else that uses it on a completely different platform?

    RK05 Drive and Controller Work

Picked up an alignment pack on loan from @djg at the System Source IBM 360 open house. Next week is shop cleanup mode so it'll be a minute before I get to aligning my RK05!

Clearpoint QED1 4MB Qbus PMI Memory

Yeah I gave up with mapping and put all the chips in an Intel AboveBoard 286 ISA RAM expansion and tested that way -- I was getting nowhere otherwise! Up to you, I'm still very appreciative of the parts unit RL drive!

Clearpoint QED1 4MB Qbus PMI Memory

I leafed thru it and it doesn't have schematics but *does* have all the diagnostic info that should be required for chasing dead DRAMs via syndrome patterns!

Here's your $680 PDF: http://filedump.glitchwrks.com/manuals/clearpoint_qed1_manual.pdf Fresh off the Ricoh ADF, if someone wants to OCR and do cleanup I will re-upload.

He should definitely do that. Like Al said, I can fix the broken one anyway, and we as a whole really ought to stop consuming more rare items because we're unwilling to troubleshoot and/or have someone else fix it.

Specifically, if the PGA ASIC isn't dead -- the other I have a spare for! I could literally just drop a good PGA ASIC into the spare parts board I have.

Clearpoint QED1 4MB Qbus PMI Memory

Heh I'll probably keep the dead tree copy :P But yeah I think it's important for all of us to have free access to. If the second-highest bidder doesn't want to come forward and buy the board itself, it'll be available -- I already have two working units and that parts unit with the physically...

    PDP-11/10 Console Faceplate

I've had Goo Gone (the orange stuff, not the similarly named Goof Off which will totally dissolve *many* plastics) soften and smear paint on stuff like screen printed front panels and resort to WD-40 often for that kind of task, of course spot testing as with any cleaner! Totally a case-by-case...

    PDP-11/10 Console Faceplate

Can confirm that kerosene and other thin oils won't hurt it. I removed very persistent sticker goop from one with WD-40. I was worried alcohol would attack the plastic and perhaps produce a noticeable shiny spot.

As I said, if whoever's bidding is here on the forums and will let one of us win who will actually scan the manual, I'll sell you a *tested* *working* QED1 (tested in an 11/83 with 10s of hours of burn-in) for way less than this one's at!

    PDP-11/05 restoration blog

Are you perhaps up against backplane troubles? The systems I've had which changed behavior on movement or a few weeks of down time have almost always ended up with backplane issues -- mostly corrosion/oxidization in the card edge connectors.
