    Porting gcc to Tektronix 4404

RMS was positive towards charging for sw, what he DISLIKES is being prohibited to modify that sw and telling other people how to do that modification and why. Which was the message he got from his previous coresearchers at MIT who now was building a LISP business in the early 80s, while doing...

Why isn't there a category for Sun Microsystems?

A Sun SS10/SS20 is not especially power hungry. The hungry ones : large 21 inch CRT (or bigger.) Remember that one SS20 can easily support 4 21 inch monsters.....

    Favorite Sun Machines

Never saw one in the real flesh, but SC2000 ? Though even a SS20 can do funny things - multiple extension chassis full of cg6 ?

Sun Fire V120 and Netra 120 Power Supply

I believe the debian isc dhcpd is for this usage a bit brain dead..... use wireshark to check what the v120 gets to verify. I believe the NetBSD dhcp demon is a bit better.

    AT&T UNIX i386 - Getting X running

hmm, i should maybe pull pcem from github and build it. If you still have trouble getting X running, could you send the virtual disks to (and i build pcem) so that i could try myself?

    AT&T UNIX i386 - Getting X running

xdm is the display manager, ie a sign-on for other users than root (in that case the X server is run as root.)

    AT&T UNIX i386 - Getting X running

xinit should start the Xserver, do the install include xdm ? One of xinit's options is a path to a .xinitrc shell script. Do the system include xterm ? If so a minimum xinitrc could be: --- #!/bin/sh twm & wait

    Sun 2/120 power supply

The normal Sun SCSI adapter and SunOS 2 itself has issues with SCSI devices with embedded SCSI... If someone says they got a ZuluSCSI working, check how they did and restrictions. I dont believe SunOS 2 as such supports that ie embedded SCSI, it wants a ACB4000 or a SCSI-to-ESDI.

    A RS6000 250 is a PowerPC machine so a somewhat simplified POWER1.

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

Isn't this a early power machine ? If so, that CPU is a multiple dies in different packages CPUs, and compared with other RISC CPU's from that era it's instruction set is COMPLICATED.

    Questions on AT&T System V release 4 .0 v 2.1

In Korn shell, it is fairly easy to implement 'dir' : do it as a function which runs /bin/ls. somehthing like this: --- dir() { /bin/ls "@$" } --

Support for terminals with magic cookie glitch

part of reason is probably that it isn't easy describing a terminal like a 3476 in terminfo, and so ncurses is gonna have a bit problem, and programmers gets trouble differing between broken terminfo and broken code in edge cases like a block-mode terminal.

Advice on backup/clone of AIX 3.2.5 on RS/6000 Model 320...

Would it be possible to tell lvm to mirror the two physical volumes to two LUNs (ie two different scsi ids) on a zuluscsi ? Later versions of AIX allows to mirror a volume group on another PV, mirrorvg is the command in that case. I know that i stretched my rootvg in my machine.

Stuck trying to install Firefox on AIX 5.3, help appreciated

Partly because Sun had a rather loyal following of sys admins and programmers who did a lot of design and programming for SPARC and SunOS and which was shared with others. IBM was never really interested in building a community like that.

Need some guidance on installing AIX on an IBM RS/6000 43p-150

youtube Mainframes & More with Matthew (Wilson) has covered installing different version of IBM OS on System i machines (power 8 and 9.) The episode there he works with disk and reset of machine is system specific (the system is much newer than yours) but he installs VIOS which basically is...
