Does anyone have Sysinternals NTFS for Windows 98 PRO in their archives?

Kinda weird that it would be problematic. It literally loads ntfs.sys and supporting files from Windows NT/2000/XP to access NTFS partitions under Windows 9x. I used Winternals NTFSDOS quite a bit back in the day and it did something similar under DOS(!). It was quite stable for what it was.

Can’t get direct cable connection to work

You need a specially wired "Laplink" parallel cable to use DCC over LPT ports. Also the DCC adapter needs a network protocol bound to it in Windows 9x.... NetBEUI does the job just fine.

Texas WTB: AT / 486 Case With at Least 4 5.25" Bays

Don't know the brand of case, but it appears to come with a Mitsumi 1X "pull out" CD-ROM drive.

Identify backup progam used with tapes

I have a copy of "Seagate Backup Exec 2.0i (STE) for Windows 95/98/NT" dated March of 1998. It came with a 8GB Travan tape drive, but I have used it with DAT drives no problem. The disc also has "Seagate Backup Exec 5.6" for Windows 3.1x from 1997 and "Seagate Backup 5.1.6" for DOS from 1997 as...

SCSI Microchannel card compatible with IBM PS2 / P70 stuff?

IBM MCA SCSI cards are generally fast, but infuriating due to the types of ports they use. You almost always need to track down an adapter to use one with your devices. The Adaptec AHA-1640 isn't the fastest (16-bit card), but it is bootable and uses a standard SCSI-2 50pin external connector...

Oldest Windows version possible to run on Pentium D + 512mb RAM?

ASRock made some boards with the Intel 865 chipset AND Socket 775 with BIOS support for things up to 65nm Core2Duo chips. They can easily run a Pentium D. The newer Core stuff works, but needs fast DDR memory, otherwise it is a bit bottlenecked. VIA one-upped that and sold a Socket 775 chipset...

Oldest Windows version possible to run on Pentium D + 512mb RAM?

In general, PCIe Socket 775 boards are hit-or-miss with pre-Windows 2000/XP. The last platform to truely support Windows 9x and weird things like DOS SoundBlaster emulation over PCI is the Intel 865 AGPSet. I've installed Windows NT 4.0 on a Core2Duo E6700 with the SMP HAL. Board originally...

    VGA capture

The card was available as PCIe 1.1 x1 and x4. Don't expect to do super duper HD capturing with the x1 versions.

    VGA capture

I got a Epiphan DVI2PCIe for dirt cheap on ebay. Those cards along with the popular Datapath VisionRGB series pop up fairly regularly for reasonable prices, although usually bracketless (ex: https://www.ebay.com/itm/325232137678). What I like about the card is that it allows for total control of...

    Apple IIGS Ticking Noise

It is used to record sound with a microphone using the Ensoniq DOC's internal ADC.

    Apple IIGS Ticking Noise

The ticking and "menu piano" is normal bahavior on a ROM 01. The audio circuity is poorly shielded, period. Some stereo sound cards actually make it worse, while some have very little noise. Technically the "raw" output of the Ensoniq DOC chip is balanced output on pins 15 (SIG+) and 16 (SIG-)...

    Broken links in older threads

Forum software database upgrades usually have a redirect mapping system in place. I know that is the case over at VWVortex. They had it in place when moving from zeroforum to vBulletin and they still appear to have it in place for old vB links after the move to XenForo.

XT motherboard in mini ATX case

Baby-AT (and XT) form factor motherboards will fit into full ATX cases. Full size AT may as well depending on the case. Backwards compatibility was accounted for and even backplates with just the AT DIN keyboard socket were available. The only thing that will not be fully accessible is the top...

Looking for advice about neighbor's sound reduction system

The contact info is likely to the management company. I would contact one of the officers directly if possible. Shouldn't be too hard the find one and ask whats up and maybe get some direct contacts to maintenance.

Looking for advice about neighbor's sound reduction system

While I find it pretty far fetched someone would put one in a condo bedroom, a typical hot tub does run a circulating pump from time to time to maintain a standby water temperature. The hum is 60hz and sounds like an air handler fan when running. When the main jets are on, it gets MUCH louder...

Getting Brother MFC-6800 printer/scanner/fax machine working

VueScan is legit paid software, but it really should "just work" in Windows if Brother did things the same as HP did. My parents had an HP OfficeJet 4100 from around the same time period. Drivers were similar, 32-bit Windows XP only and never updated. When Windows Vista came out, HP support said...

Getting Brother MFC-6800 printer/scanner/fax machine working

I had to deal with this irritation with a label printer at work. Raymond Chan explains: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20041110-00/?p=37343 Basically the Brother printer doesn't send a serial number to the host, so Windows has to kludge things. The printer itself speaks PCL, so it...

Looking for advice about neighbor's sound reduction system

Could be HVAC related, or something as simple as a badly balanced ceiling fan.
