Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

Hi Dave. I believe we have been talking in terms of a signal trace whereas this is a schematic diagram showing pathways. The stereo plug (from both the TRS-80 and Cassette deck) is one of two jacks + plug on the "Y" adapter. As I've posted, a mono "Y" adapter wasn't available at the time. I do...

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

I do believe we have momentarily talked about a direct connection between the plugs at either end of the diagram - omitting the mono/stereo adapter. This is the same diagram as before but I have clarified the terms of the source plug. This is with keeping the current stereo "Y" plug at the...

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

The far left plug in the diagram is the stereo "Y" adapter and yes it is coming from a mono plug source - the TRS-80 via the Cassette Deck. So yes there is a major flaw in my thinking. Thanks for pointing the dead-short out. The right channel is going to Screen not Unused. I will need to...

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

Thanks Dave. I've never been to the NT but: With my current "Y" cable and plug on order, this pictured will be the arrangement.

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

I can solder ok. but not snappy yet. I've actually ordered previously a plug to do the job. For me It'sa 48km road-trip to Jaycar, the components store for jacks etc so an ebay order has been easier.

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

After further inspection, the mono audio from the TRS-80 is carried on the Left channel of the stereo "Y" adapter to the mono jack of the cassette deck. The stereo "Y" adapter is also connected to the stereo speaker input. Although the humming has stopped I might be grounding the right channel...

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

Thanks Dave. It seems the "Y" cable is working by way of the mono input jack on the cassette deck. This mono input jack seems to balance both channels in the stereo "Y" adapter and indeed the speaker to gnd. The previous attempt was a direct stereo link from the mono TRS-80 to stereo speaker...

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

First a big thank-you to all respondents. Update is the first stereo "Y" adapter arrived and it fixed the problem. No hum. It is between the TRS-80, Cassette deck and speaker. I now have an extra ground loop isolator, mono splitter and stereo/mono plug (all 3.5mm) coming in the mail but seem now...

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

HI Dave. Yes all the units are in some way connected to the same outlet via a Belkin Surge protected board. The hum isn't there when the speaker input is disconnected from the stereo jumper I'm currently using to the TRS-80 output (Direct No Cassette) I thought a mono adapter there might be an...

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

I've tried a stereo female to female 3.5mm from trs-80 out to speaker in so far (with hum). The picture is my planned alternative.

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

The cassette deck I have is a Radio Shack CCR-81, which I didn't know but cuts the speaker when the input jack is plugged, so no audio. The hum is there with or without the cassette deck connected. I've ordered a mono splitter 3.5mm for the deck and TRS-80 and a 3.5mm stereo to mono adapter for...

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

Hi Dave, I seem to have had conflicting measurements. After a few re-tries the result is as in pic.

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

Yes it is. Yes, checked with my multimeter. It is as you've said, although unlike Ira Goldkings wiring diagram online, the data-in and data-out don't seem to have a common ground. Richard.

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

The cassette port cable I have is an aftermarket job, with input and output lines clearly marked. The PC speaker is a Diamond-Audio LoudMouse 2 with a stereo 3.5mm male jack input.

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

Hi Dave. Thanks for the info. 1. There's no gain control on the speaker/amp 2. Do ferrite clamps make any difference here?. 3. The stereo plug on the speaker is Receiving a signal not outputting one. I thought both L/R would accept the mono signal in the plug? Also, would a mono "Y" adapter...

Getting sound out of a Model 1 TRS-80

I've bought a Loadmouse pc speaker and have connected the OUT cable to it via a lead adapter. The "Y" adapter needed to maintain the cassette function is on the way. I know the TRS-80 audio output isn't amplified but the sound is very low... and with a loud hum from the speaker when connected...
