Thanks for the datasheet, it is a better quality version of the one I already have. I think I may start by just capturing the writes. If I can see the increasing addresses writing the 0xAA pattern stopping at a particular address I think that may tell me which pair of chips has a bad chip.

I have partial schematics that I have reverse engineered. However, I am not an electronic engineer and so they will not be drawn logically and are highly likely to have mistakes too. But if you are interested I don't mind making them available.

I just checked and the disks I have been given are hard-sectored. So I guess the RX50 can't deal with that. The disks are brand new, the box was still sealed.
