    Startup error on Commodore PC40-III

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up removing the socket, soldering in a new one, dropping in the DS1287 replacement I got from eBay, and it was fully working. An hour later, the hard drive died. Back to eBay I go.

    Startup error on Commodore PC40-III

I installed the DS1287 replacement - https://www.ebay.com/itm/256115671181 and the "illegal shutdown" error is gone, however, now it gets stuck at "testing extended memory". No beep codes, continual flashing cursor.

    Startup error on Commodore PC40-III

I found this - The CMOS battery on this motherboard is integrated inside Dallas DS1287 real time clock controller. It can be replaced following these instructions. Without a working battery, the computer will loose its BIOS settings during reset and it will be not possible to boot it correctly.

    Startup error on Commodore PC40-III

I replaced a Dallas DS1287 with a Dallas DS14287. I though they were supposed to be equivalent. Do you think this would work? https://www.ebay.com/itm/256115671181

    Startup error on Commodore PC40-III

I recently picked up PC40-III. Initially the error was a battery failure / CMOS checksum error. In researching I discovered this was a common issue and the Dallas time clock needed to be replaced. So, I removed the Dallas chip, installed a socket, and replaced with a NOS Dallas chip. Now I...

Crazy question about floppy drive compatibility

Thanks. I'm almost there. I have the Shugart setup as drive B. On boot, it lights up and the head moves as expected and then the light goes out. In IMD, the head clean process now does move the head as expected. When I try to format a disk, the head moves across the disk and back to stop...

Crazy question about floppy drive compatibility

I have not. I recently ordered a logic probe but have never used one. I removed the drive from its enclosure and I'm assuming you mean pin 41 on the ribbon connector. I have additional information that may shed new light on the issue, if not I can try to figure out how to probe pin 41. New...

Crazy question about floppy drive compatibility

Update - I now have the drive set up with a 37 pin to 50 pin adapter. The drive light is on and using the IMD program, the RPM test runs. When I use either IMD of 8FORMAT to format the disk, I get a write protect error. The 8" disks I am using are not notched, Additionally, with 8FORMAT I...

    1541 Disk Drive issue

I'm trying to restore a 1541 Newtronics drive to working order. At this point, the drive can list directories and load programs. It cannot format or write files to disks. The alignment program (WorldofJani) shows all correct tracks with 100% in the track column and -100% in the 1/2 track...

Crazy question about floppy drive compatibility

Ok, so before I drive myself nuts, any thoughts on what I'll need to actually connect the drive to the PC? The PC (5150) has an external DB37 female connector from the floppy controller The external 8" drive has an external 50 pin male ribbon cable connector (at least that's what I think it...
