    Maxtor 7120AT jumper settings.

Big thanks to everyone who's helped me with this! Yeah, I'm out of country for a bit, but I'll probably come back to this next year and try to get the computer bootable again. I appreciate you all!

It might've been just cleaning the read/write heads on the old drive. I'm not sure. I still can't get it to boot: "No operating system detected." but the data's there, at least.

I have succeeded in booting from the floppy and I can confirm the files are still on drive C. A Windows installation dated 9-4-98, AOL 3.0, DOS, and Program Files.

Wouldn't you know it, that's exactly what I have! 😂 I'm leaving the country for six months on the 24th, so my window to be able to work on this project is rapidly closing. If you have any suggestions on what type floppy to buy, drop a URL to the Amazon page and I'll overnight it. Appreciate all...

Okay... That at least makes me feel better at least, to know that they are there. Thanks. Yeah, if I pull back the slider, there appear to be some annular rings on the inner disc of the floppy... How do you recommend I inspect and clean the drive? Something like this?

    Maxtor 7120AT jumper settings.

Wait... Looking at this, I just realized, it still isn't writing Command.com? WTF. No wonder it couldn't find the command interpreter! It only wrote 36 out of 42 files! Why the heck is EVERY program screwing up and failing to write the same six files to the disk? It's the same ones WinImage was...

Attempt #2... 1. Format in command.com: 2. Write in Rawritewin: 3. Verify in Windows 10 Explorer: 4. Attempt to boot the 486 off the floppy... No bad noises this time. The amber activity LED comes on twice during boot-up. Now I'm getting "Diskette read failure" 😕 I'm starting to...

It worked! Let me go see if I can boot off it. Edit: So, I don't know... I think the 486 might have eaten my floppy. It wrote okay, and yes, I could see the contents in Windows Explorer. Then I took it to the 486 and booted up, and I got this: Got to "Starting MS-DOS," but there were some...

I do not. I'm don't know anyone who uses floppies anymore. I know I haven't used them since 2004-ish. Tried on another laptop, also running Windows 10. Same error.

Well, I don't know. It's one of the top rated rives Well, I ordered another USB floppy drive to replace the first one. Formatted the disk and attempted to write the DOS 6.22 boot disk + Diskedit.exe. 3% in... Unless every diskette in the pack I bought is bad, I'm out of ideas.

I'm getting the same errors on my desktop. "Floppies do not match." Tried with a different floppy out of the box, dos3.3 instead of dos6.22, nothing works.

Q2: I formatted the floppy again. It seems to be fine, as far as I can tell. Q1: It isn't always the same. I tried again, and this time I get this error: If I click ignore, the disk continues formatting, ticks up another few percent, and then gives this error: At 59%: I guess I can...

I'll work on getting the disk written. Assuming I'm successful and I'm able to boot from it on the 486, what exactly would you like me to check? What commands would you have me run from DOS? Edit: Error attempting to write disk from WinImage, tried multiple times on multiple floppies

Here? https://www.allbootdisks.com/download/dos.html I dunno guys. I appreciate all the help, but I'm getting defeated at every turn here. I can format the floppy through Windows 10 My Computer, but hell if any of these DOS boot disks will let me write to the floppy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Tried...

The 486 does have an internal floppy drive. Not sure if it works -- haven't tested it. I ordered 3.5" 1.44Mb floppies and a 3.5" USB A: drive No other old computers
