I wonder if the origin story of the 68008 is because of IBM.

I think they were already going to make the 68008, they just didn't want to do it on IBM's schedule. And IBM may have wanted a second source too.

I think the 68008 came out some time after the IBM PC was introduced, so a little late. I wonder if they would have been picked over the 8088 if they had the choice...

Motorola couldn't even produce the 68008 in volume until 1984 which rather hampered the Sinclair QL. Motorola also cut the price of the full 68000 so the 68008 lost its main advantage.
