I've got an Adler J4 typewriter here that I've cleaned up and it's mostly working. The one problem I'm having is when I try to use a capital letter or any other character used by pressing shift it's half cut off and raised about half a character higher than the lowercase letters.

I've tried margin settings and any other adjustable handle and I have no change. No visible rust at all and all keys move freely (no feel of grinding or excessive resistance).

Anyone have any ideas?

The way the 'shift' function on a manual typewriter works is exactly how it sounds... it shifts the entire type mechanism downward so that the top letter on the type slug hits the ribbon/paper, instead of the bottom letter. It sounds like what's happening on yours is that it's not shifting down far enough. Normally there's an adjustment screw for that somewhere underneath the type basket. Just take the covers off and look for whatever the basket is bottoming out against... when you find it, screw it in a little bit.
