I can't get those dumps to run. Word_Perfect_D1_DOS_720K.7z just hangs when starting WP.EXE and the disks in Word_Perfect_DOS_DSHD_198807.7z can't even be read on the Apricot.

how to cleanly reset to text mode

Just clear the screen via escape sequence (terminal emulator is Heathkit H19-compatible, which is a superset of VT52).

This code should also work on Victor

It does, but Victor indeed does not have a BIOS call to switch modes, and does not have a pre-allocated frame buffer in low memory. Not fun to deal with. Also, MAME displays extra 10 pixels at the top.

You can also try the Apricot XEN. It supports the Xi video system as an expansion card.
