Best 386-era machine?

NMOS had problems running much faster than about 16MHz (and those ran pretty hot).
I learned the hard way that a 10 MHz 286 will burn your finger! After that experience I put a heatsink on it.

The 286 was a huge improvement over the 8088 in terms of performance.
Over an 8088, sure. But an 8086 (or 80186, or NEC V30) system with video and hard drive controllers which take advantage of its 16-bit external bus will be much more competitive with the 286.
