After some fun and games working out how to use Emacs to edit individual bytes in a binary file, I managed to change both the I/O distributor bytes in the disk image to $02 and rebooted my emulator. About 3 seconds later, I got this:-

attachment.php

As you can see, it now has a pair of floppy drives as well as the cassette recorder, and the tiny square on the last screen line is actually a flashing BASIC prompt, so I'm back in business and hopefully will now be able to find out why the BEXEC* file wouldn't load/run.

There seems to be something wrong inside the BASIC interpreter - it will execute one immediate command (eg PRINT "HELLO", or PRINT 2+2), but then the prompt no longer flashes and the emulator locks up. At least I now know where to start looking for the cause.
