Greg Nacu has released C64OS v1.0, his new, text-based operating system for the Commodore 64 with the minimum requirements of a SD2IEC card drive and joystick/mouse.

You can use its full-featured File Manager or go into the App Launcher. Over 25 utilities are available! For more information on getting started with C64OS, see

You can purchase C64OS in two different packages (bundles). The starter bundle at $59 Canadian (not including postage and any taxes) or the standard bundle at $64 Canadian (not including postage and any taxes). See

Whether you buy the starter bundle or the standard bundle, you get the pre-installed C64OS on a SD card and a very well-done, printed User's Guide Supplement, among other items.

For an up-to-date, comprehensive review of C64OS v1.0, go to Perifractic's Youtube video at

Ooo, an optional Star Trek theme in C64OS !

Yeah I saw that it required two expensive things I don't have... so it kinda killed any excitement I might have had for it.

Maybe someday.

What can it do that GEOS can't? While I love to see new software released for vintage systems, I just don't get why this exists.

More for fun, also has better file management.

Now if this “program “ was actually a bank switched rom upgrade that you soldered into the mainboard allowing you to run it without consuming any ram and also switch back to Commodore basic instantly at will with no compatibility issues now that would be An accomplishment.

It looks really snazzy and the documentation is excellent but I can't help but get a bit of an Amiga vibe when it comes to what you need to get in the front door. For Canadians starting off with the classic C64, a joystick and a 1541 you need the software...

$59.00
$15-$20 shipping (I'd be amazed if it's less since shipping in and out of Canada has been awful for years now)
-----
$74.00, plus taxes
Also, it's currently out of stock. At least you get a physical copy on an SD card and not an expiring downlink to a secure server.

Then you need a supported SD2IEC. There's clones but lets use the one suggested above.

$48.85
$14.52 shipping (may vary)
-----
$63.37, plus taxes

Then lets add the mouse. We will exclude a genuine Commodore mouse because those prices are hilarious/would bias what I'm trying to say here and use the above adapter, again there are multiple clones.

$25.34
$15-$20 shipping (and no estimate here, so that one might not even be available to Canadians)
-----
$40.00, plus taxes

$74.00
$63.37
$40.00
-----
$177.37 --Subtotal
$8.87 --5% General Sales Tax (this is rough as taxes might be applied to the above items separately)
($26.68 --15% Harmonized Sales Tax, if you live in Ontario, so lets just use the national 5% taxes and ignore provincial taxes for now)
-----
$186.24CAD

Even though the mouse adapter and the SD2IEC are multi-use that's very steep for me at least, just to run an alternate OS.

Shipping should be less if you are in Canada, because they are in Canada...

Would be nice if they offered a demo that ran in an emulator (maybe even on their website).

GEOS and Magic Desk 1 both used a joystick as an input device like a mouse, as does Final Cartridge III+, as does this. Yea, the cost it a bit high, but it is to support the developer, and it looks like support and patches will be available to all who purchased it. The biggest cost to getting it would be an SD2IEC device if you do not have one already, and there are several models on the market, so shop around.

@br44 do you mean the SD2IEC (available cheaply, and you can even build your own), or the mouse?

You can get a combo of a FastLoad cartridge and an SD2IEC here:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/125520002604

And you can get a mouse adapter here:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/125289167302

That way, it’s not particularly expensive. And, the SD2IEC and FastLoad combo is very useful.

I think my original statement came out wrong. What I meant to say is... I've recently spent a lot of money getting my c64 up and running. After having to replace dead parts (MPU, PLA, RAM), after purchasing the dead test cart, after fixing the power supply, after constructing a new AV cable, after buying a 1541, after fixing the power supply for the 1541, it still needs a new sid, I still need to buy floppies, it still needs heatsinks, I still need a joystick....

It's hard to swallow 50 dollars for the software, and 45-50 dollars for the sd2iec. I'll get it eventually, I just got to let the wallet cool off a bit. You know how it goes.

C64 OS v1.03 has been released and now has support for the scroll wheel on a mouse connected through a MicroMys/MouSTer and support for mounting .D64, .D71, and .D81 files. You can update the earlier version(s) of the OS by going to the download page at

Note: To update v1.0 to the latest update, you must first run the v1.01 update, then run the v1.02 update, and then run the last update.

C64OS gets better and better! Version 1.04 has been released, the Multimedia Release. In this version, there is a new graphics file format called “Commodore Grafix” which has support for metadata, variable frame rate sizes, native/non-native video modes, multi-frame matrix images, including 3D models, panoramas, and animation sequences. There are the new and/or improved Creator Tool and C64 Archiver, and the new SID Preview Utility with a SID Search Service. Finally, the gfx.lib supports character-mode graphics. (Some new features only available with the use of a RAM expander) Whew!

Check out the more complete descriptions of C64OS v1.04 and short videos of the Multimedia Release at

P.S. Remember… to upgrade to v1.04, you must have upgraded to the previous versions, v1.00 to v1.03, in order. See https://c64os.com/c64os/softwareupdates

Better and better at doing exactly what useful thing? I'm sorry but I cannot find the real use for this, as cool as it looks, from a user standpoint, it feels irrelevant to me.

Version 1.06 of C64OS has been released! This version has some new utilities including "Visualizer." To upgrade to your v1.05 to v1.06, go to
