Change bearings in RL01 drive?

Is there someone here that has changed bearings in a RL01 drive? The bearings in the disc spindle in one of my drives sounds bad and generates vibrations. From what I can see the belt pully is pressed on the axis. I guees heat, a puller and a hydralic press is good tools to have.

It seams like the complete spindle came as one part back in the days. The spindle is very easy to change, it took me very little time to remove the spindle from the drive.

Any ideas?

While I have no experience attempting to replace the bearings, I too have a drive which sounds a bit suspicious and would like to hear what others may have done in this regard. On a related note, I am also curious if anyone has found a suitable replacement for the spindle ground button, the small graphite cone beneath the spindle held in place by the spindle ground brush strap. Being rather soft, these can wear quickly to the point that the strap begins to contact the spindle itself.

We just took the little metal straps off RD5x drives and threw them away. On the other hand you could buy rod stock https://www.mcmaster.com/raw-materials/conductive-graphite-rods/ and cut short pieces with a hand saw. If you want to get really fancy, the end(s) could be smoothed with sandpaper, but they would wear smooth in short order anyway.

Thanks for that suggestion and link. It may now come down to how historically accurate I care to be.

Be careful working with graphite. A friend of mine was a machinist who made graphite electrodes for his EDM machine. He was not in the habit of wearing a dust mask until his doctor told him to cut back on his smoking. Although he had never smoked, his chest x-rays came back looking like that of a 4 pack a day smoker. Not a whole lot of difference between graphite and coal dust when your lungs are involved.
