Hello everyone, I'm restoring an IBM PC 286 that I got for essentially nothing. I have been hunting for one of these for the last 9 years, and i'v very happy.

Only problem is the case is infested with dust bunnies and it doesn't work.

I've traced the problem with it not running to a bad capacitor in either the power supply or main motherboard, so that's almost a no-brainer. and I've chased the larger bunnies out with compressed air. I have a thing with dust though, I cannot stand it, not even the fine little residual bits on the board. Someone suggested using electrical contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol spray to get it off, will this damage the board at all?

Many thanks, Mike

I keep a horsehair brush to sweep the stubborn dust off. Other than that, yeah, rubbing alcohol will not damage anything.

I think I have a horsehair brush somewhere it'll probably be in my mess of a toolbox, I got the motherboard out today, all looks clean and tidy with only minor dist residue. I'll have a go with the contact cleaner tomorrow, being careful not to blast the lables off the EPROMS.
