I have a PET 2001-32 (built-in cassette, chicklet keyboard) with a video problem. The first ten characters (approx.) are wider than the rest of the characters on the line. One person told me to rotate two metal disks on the neck of the CRT but all that does is raise or lower the lines. It doesn't change their width. Does anyone here know how I can even out the width?

TIA

If you are unaware of the dangers of working in a CRT based monitor, then I strongly suggest that you seek that educatation.

You don't say whether you received the monitor in the faulty state, or whether it was fine when you received it but has subsequently degraded.

Per below, the symptom you describe sounds like no or little horizontal linearity compensation.
You've got an old monitor, and so look for the horizontal linearity coil. You could be lucky and your problem corrected by adjusting that coil.
