Hi!, I just purchased a Compaq Portable II and it boots from drive A>. However, I can’t boot from the HDD. I get a 1790-Disk 0 Error.

I used an IBM AT Diagnostics Disk to set the bios and it seems to a cost my changes. I set the HDD Disk Type to 13 for the NEC D3142 disk drive installed. A type 13 was the closest match.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks you,

Howard

You need the Compaq Softpaq for that model, not an IBM disk. If memory serves, it's SP0306 (Google for it).

It’s a NEC D3142

Data Heads 8
Data Surfaces 8
Tracks/Surface 642
Track Density 850 tpi
Bit Density 14,000 bpi
Sectors/Track 17 (RLL = 26 sectors)
Bytes/Sector 512
Record Method MFM

So does any drive in the softpaq setup show those parameters? You can also use ROMTABLE.EXE (from the below link) ran from a floppy to see the list of supported drives:
