IBM took away their cassette port for whatever reason. (Anyone know the back story on why it was dropped from the 5160?)

Probably because no one was using it, and they needed the extra room on the back of the motherboard for the XT's 3 more slots.

p.s. I believe the original Compaq Portable has solder pads on its motherboard for a cassette port, but it was never implemented.
