Dallas DS1225 in Tek 2465B scopes

The Dallas DS1225 is used in the Tek 2465B and occasionally it turns up in other computer based apparatus. I have used my 2456B in every computer repair I have done.

It has been over 10 years since I published the paper on the Dallas RAM issues in the Tek 2465B scope.

The solution I decided on then was to switch in FM16w08 FRAM. Over that time, since I did the first one, in my daily use 2465B, I have been monitoring the FRAM, including its calibration constants, and the good news is that they remain unchanged over this time frame. Which is a reassuring report for people who changed to FRAM.

Out of all the projects and papers I put on my website, it was this one that garnered the most feedback, from places such as Technical Institutes, Universities, Research centers and private users around the world wanting to keep their Tek scopes running. Likely because users of scopes like the 2465B tend to fall in love with them.

Overall though (for a few reasons) my opinion is that the DALLAS RAM is the better part, that is if only its battery problem was solved once and for all.

The technique of applying an external battery to the DS1225 was not a good solution, because the internal discharged battery has electrical leakage and it drains the added battery in a year or two.

The Dallas DS1225 is an interesting problem to solve. It just goes to show that many problems we confront can be in the field of electronics engineering, or mechanical engineering and sometimes we could choose either solution or a mixture of both.

What I have devised here is a mechanical method to immortalize the DS1225, without any special tools, other than a simple hand made jig and a drill press and some readily available ebay milling tools and some scissors:

Glitch has been offering a new version of the 1225, but is currently out of stock.
I suspect the "out of stock" is because Maxim/Analog Devices has discontinued the DS1218. Still, I suspect that an equivalent using discretes could be fabricated.
I liked what Glitch did with that.

At least the original DS1225's with expired batteries (all the ones made in the 90's now) are still available and it seems a shame to throw them away when they can be immortalized and the all contain the lovely ceramic package DIP DS1218. It is really that chip which makes the behavior of the DS1225 so resistant to any power cycling issues.
 
Another thing, most of the early DS1225's I have seen used the DS1210 control IC, while the later ones used the DS1218.

The DS1210 chip was an interesting part because it has two battery inputs, not one. One experiment I had not tried yet was to hook the auxiliary battery onto the unused input on the DS1210. It would require a cut-down beside the pin and also to cut the pin as it will be grounded. In that instance I think the effect would be quite different and the discharged internal battery would not drain the applied external one. One problem with this idea, for the 2465B scope at least, is that with the DS1225 in its socket it is too tall to place the battery on the top of it and it doesn't clear the scope's casing.
From the DS1210's data sheet:

The DS1210 controller provides an internal isolation switch which allows the connection of two batteries. During battery backup operation the battery with the highest voltage is selected for use. If one battery should fail, the other will take over the load. The switch to a redundant battery is transparent to circuit operation and to the user. In applications where battery redundancy is not required, a single battery should be connected to the BAT1 pin, and the BAT2 battery pin must be grounded.
