//e joystick question

On the Apple //e, when a joystick button is pressed, does the switch close to GND or to +5V ?

(Yes, I've tried a DVM but it's giving me strange readings)

Not JUST +5, you do that you risk blowing the port.

The switch does wire across +5, but you also need to run a 680 ohm resistor from the signal side to ground.

+5v --- normally open switch ---- |button port| --- 680 ohm --- ground
