As you have rushed out and bought a Fanuc PTR, I shall point you at a toy interface I did to evaluate the PIC16F13145's PLD capability (weak) https://www.emeritus-solutions.com/papertape/fanuc/FanucInterFace1.zip However, the EVB is sub 20 £/$/e, it provides both a serial output and a (pedal) switch tape hold. The complete design is in the zip, also a pin out spreadsheet for the Fanuc connector if you prefer to reimplement. And, once you have more paper tape than can be laid out straight for feeding, you will need appropriate unspooling arrangements to avoid paper tangles ...
