>>> EDIT APRIL 15
-------------------
There has been overwhelmng interest expressed by PMs since I mentioned much of my collection was on the block. I have attempted to answer most of those PMs. I now realise it was premature since many of these machines hadn't been used in many years altho most had been working machines originally. That means firing them up and/or testing or repairing minor or major faults. Then there is also the problem of deciding their value. Altho I am retired, there are many things that occupy my time.

A house over 100 years old i've rescued needing repars and painting and a large yard which includes flower beds and a large
vegetable garden which always supplies more than I need, no matter how I plan it. Retirement shouldn't be taxing.

So that means I will eventually get to the machines of your interest, but it won't be quick. Should you in the interem acqure the machines you desire, or the price I ask is unacceptable, no problem. View my collection as a possible source.

Thank-You for your interest. But I will proceed with the most eaisly dealt-with computers first and contact those who expressed interest and offer a price to them, which if not acceptable will be offered to others who expressed interest.

Thank You

In case the silence is throwing you off, wow. Very large list of very fine machines you have there :) I was impressed when I first saw it, still impressed, and as most folks a little speechless. I miss having access to my collection lol.. I need to get my stuff set back up.

Wow! That's one hell of a collection! Which begs the question..... where do you find room for all of it? If your like me, there in just about every room in the house.

I hope that's a Compaq Portable III and not a II; at least that's what the keyboard I sent you is for.

Yes, I saw your post in the Portable II/Mercedes thread; return address should be on the parcel, if there's a problem email me off-list.

Quite a collection for sure. what arrangements *did* you finally make for the afterlife? I sure wouldn't want to be your executor...

I was part of a group of collecters which was attempting to set up a computer museum in Toronto. The group fell apart just a few years before my pension kicked in. When it did I bought a hundred-year-old house where my elderly sister lived, in my natal province of Manitoba at a ridiculously low price cause it needed some improvements and hauled much of my collection out here. I could never have hoped to buy a house in any of the cities on my pension income. The house is gradually coming in shape and now has a new roof via a government grant, the basement has been bailed out and much of the broken or cracked windows replaced, plus a multitude of other stuff. It was a well-built house.

In Toronto I got by with a 1BR apartment and several storage rentals. I abandoned about 1/2 of what I had. In my 2story house I now have unfettered space but some rooms are a bit cramped. Of course my inventory doesn't include the multitude of books, parts, cables and software which doubles the space needed. Nor some of my other interests which also take up considerable space.

At least I no longer have to throw a mattress on a bed of computers and now have real coffee and end tables. A couch is unneeded and takes up too much space. Fortunately I have no significant other now to complicate things.

I had thought much of this as a means of topping up my income a bit. I did pretty good for the first couple of years but then the market fell out for vintage stuff and now of course the economy has gone into melt-down. I had also thought that I could use some of my handyman skills in this town where most of the populace is elderly but found in these close-knit small towns work goes to relatives or close family friends.

My executor is my nephew who's in Wpg. and a fairly understanding guy and I worry about this. But I'm in reasonably good health and hope to last long enough to reduce the volume considerably. Otherwise I fear the town dump may wind up being the recepticle of much of this plenty.

Holy S**T, you finally sent it? I figured they'd have to dig ol' L up and rebury it with him LOL

Even though Micom is probably going to outlive most of us, give your executor my name and number and I'll find good homes for all that fine equipment :)

After about 2 years I had given up on the KB frontpiece. I was surprised and pleased when I discovered it at the post office.

Your estate services has always been foremost in my mind. I think I might have already given him your address. I'll have to assure myself that I did. I'm starting to get things in order again somewhat. I'll likely be e-mailing you before long about the EGA monitor. I figure it was likely the AT battery had died. I also want to get HDDs working on the PC-10s which lie disassembled on one of my workbenches.

Ohh, I forgot to include the Osborne 1 in the inventory and have corrected it.

You could bequeath the collection to me, L. Problem solved. (Course, you'll prolly have to leave me the house too, so's I'll have someplace to keep it all).

Sadly and shamefully, no. As a result, many that I had once got working have quit, whether from battery failure or some other problem that I once knew. For example my NEXT computers require a password and altho I put stickes on them and others, they invariably come off and dissappear. Gremlins get them ! I hate using marking pencils and defacing the cabinets. I know there are other methods which are less intrusive, but haven't initiated a method yet.

I should keep a spec file on each. At one time I could usually remember their features but I must admit that as I get older my memory banks are increasingly expanded and harder to access. I absolutely refuse to admit my memory is failing. After 72 years of memory accumulation is it any wonder I have problems at times accessing particular banks of neurons ? I know 40-year-olds who can't remember what happened last week. One of the expandng IT sciences is organising access to much of the data on terrabyte hard drives. The human brain on the other hand can easily access many multiple times that amount of data.

Dementia(Altheimers disease) however does destroy synapses and that is a different problem.

Don't sweat it, Lawrence (It being turning our little toys on once in awhile). I only have about 10 various Epsons and Necs and I can't keep those nicad puppies at the correct charge level, no way. Just doing one would be a full time job. Worse, I accidentally rediscovered the horror of over-charging the nicads. I had a Zenith laptop with those HUGE battery packs. Well, it ended up under my bed still plugged into the charger. Of course, like a week later, I find this literally exploded case. Took me days to figure out what had happened. <<Oh ya, I do remember reading about that you can overcharge the nicads, he thinks to himself>>.

The problem is storage. How do you do it. I have only a few models and am already running into that problem.
I have some apple performas, not really collectable, 631's and 6116, as well as brother word processors etc. but even the small numbers i have are hard to find room for. well thanks.

Lawrence,

It is almost a fun game to see how many of those I have used in my 25+ year history of computing ..

Most of the list I've seen and touched once already. I've never seen your Grid machines, but after a few years of occasionally writing debug programs and dissecting BIOS for your Yahoo! group I feel like I own one. ;-0

I'd like to have that kind of variety, but there just isn't time. It's a great retirement hobby, assuming we all make it that far. (I'm working toward that at least.)

C64 Custom metal case

hmmm? got any pics?

and try to keep those computers away from the land-fill, especially the Commodores. i hope you are aware that theres a death penalty in throwing away Commodore equipment? ;)

Well, as I've mentoned, one of these Canadian Post Offce rebadged Grids is yours for the asking whenever you want and have cleaned out your basement, just for the help you've given the platform. Hell if Hargle could solve the BIOS defined hdd model restrictions he could likely have his pick of many of my duplicates. I do have access with the SCSI module, to other peripherals, including HDDs but that takes up the same space as my battery.

Hargle has the hope of the Grid 15xx forum and others on his shoulders. Damn I'm glad I'm not that smart. Just kidding Hargle. But hoping your efforts keep enlivening us. Merci.

Lawrence

I intend to have some of his BIOS hacking goodness rub off on me. It also helps that he is just about in the neighborhood ...

that collection is simply amazing. if it was mine, i wouldn't part with any of it. i'd start a museum.
