Found old 5162

Ran that program, and it spat out 176
If the CMOS contents are still intact:
The "176" you reported from the BASIC program translates to: drive 0 = type 11, drive 1 = none. The type 11 doesn't match an ST-225. Is the hard drive in your 5162 a Seagate ST-225 ?

[ For other readers, 176 is 10110000 binary. The upper nibble (4 bits) is for drive 0 and the lower nibble is for drive 1. 1011 binary is 11 decimal, and 0000 binary is 0 decimal. ]

Is it possible to see some pictures that clearly show the mounting details for the half height floppy drives in your XT 286?
I have two HH FDD sets which I believe came out of XT 286 PCs. One set is marked "IBM Component" with and has a YD-380 1.2Mb (p/n 62X0790) and a YD-580 360Kb (p/n 62X0789). The other set has two YD580 360Kb drives (p/n 6480174). All four drives have black plastic face plates that are 145mm wide.
This is narrower than most of the other 5.25" drives that I have seen.
More common width for half height 5.25" drives seems to be 148mm and the older full height FDDs (eg Tandon TM100) are 149mm wide.
The drive cutout in the front metal panel of my 5150/5160 chassis' is 147mm.
So if I fit a YD-580 or YD-380 into a 5150/5160 chassis, there is a visible gap on each side of the drive when viewed from the front.
In the picture of your XT 286, there appears to be a black (plastic?) trim piece fitted in that area - presumably to fill this gap.
Any pictures or info that clarify this point would be appreciated.
BTW I'd also be interested to know what FD controller your PC uses - is it an IBM part ?
Cheers.

On the 5162 and late XT's they do have a plastic trim that fits around the drives.

XT/286 had a 1.2MB drive as standard, but you could get a 1.2MB / 360kB combo, or two 1.2MB drives.

Late XT had half height drives, either 1 or 2 360kB.

I have both an XT and an XT/286 to hand, so can dig out further photos if you wish... :)

Not sure about the size (yes, there is a plate around it) but what is a point is that the floppies from the XT-286 have yellow leds, as opposed to the red ones in PC/XT's.

5170 drives also have yellow leds, but are grey.

That would be helpful and much appreciated. Could you please try to capture details of how the trim is installed/secured. Does anyone have a spare set of these trims ? Cheers.

I'll get photos some time this week :)

The trim simply clips around the outside of the drives, but it can't fall off as the case front holds it firmly in place. It doesn't really do anything other than to neaten up the edges somewhat.

The drives are secured with a screw through the bottom of the case (same as the hard drive) and a weird metal clip near the drive front. Hard to explain... My XT is missing this clip, but the XT/286 has it.
