I started my IT career repairing IBM terminals in the late 90s. The terminals were tested on an IBM 5362 (a compact System/36, essentially), running the strangest OS I'd ever seen. My next job was as a network engineer, pulling out twin-ax cables and putting in Cat5.

Lately I've been looking at getting a 5362 with some 5291s and play around with the technology I got started out on, but never had the chance to use much.

I ended up buying a System/32 in South Carolina on Facebook marketplace. I'm disassembling down to the frame now, and plan to grind off rust and repaint it.



Good:

• All the logic cards are present
• Rust seems to be surface only
• The mirror box for the display is present
• The giant hard drive looks great and was locked
• Keyboard and control panel look good
• All the wiring was connected to the right places

Bad:

• The floppy is missing the motor
• The print band is missing
• The power supply looks to have been gone through, but not repaired. Someone labeled one of the transformers bad.

My plan is to get the frame cleaned up, new casters, and repainted first. Then I'll clean up and reassemble the components. Then I'll slowly go through the power supply, board by board. I will replace bad components with their modern equivalents and see if I can test each section on the bench before attempting to bring the machine up.
