Help with Willem 5.0C programmin

Hey Everyone,

I'm currently trying to use the Willem5.0C programmer with an Intel D8748H chip, but I'm running into issues. When I try to read data from an empty or programmed chip, all I get are zeros. I’ve already applied the recommended modification, but I still can’t program anything into the chip. I was able to verify and successfully program eeprom on a different ic, so that confirms the board does work. I cannot figure out why I can't program this D8748H.
1)Configured the dip switch per software
2)5.6v Jumper
3)21v Jumper
4)Mod for daughter board mcs48

Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated!

I looked at my Ver 6.0 for the Willem Programmer I have and you need to select the Device as D8748H,
Set Vpp to 21 Volts for programming, use the MCS-48 Adapter, and set the Dip Switches on the Programmer.

It looks as if you have everything correct. I'd try 5.0 V vs 5V6.

I've attached a Photo of my Ver 6 software that shows similar settings.

I'd hope the two Levers mount n the same position, top left, and makes good connections.

Are you powering with an external VDC adapter into the Bottom VDC Port of the Willem?

Are you sure about the Adapter Modification with a Resistor inserted, and a hardwire jumper across the resistor?
That doesn't look correct.

Thanks Larry,

I am powering with an external 12V brick. My software is the same as yours with all the similar settings. The resistor is jumped with a small 0604 packaged 4700pF capacitor in parallel, I didn't have an axial cap, hence why it looks like just a jumper. I was running some tests and seems like the prog pin, whenever I run the program, only supplies 16.2v. The datasheet says I need 18v pulse for 50ms to program. Maybe somethings wrong with the daughter board?

When running the program, it just says error for the buffer and when i read a chip that i know, for sure, has data. It displays all zeros. I don't know what my issue could be after following all previous forum posts.
 
Welcome to the board @EENEWBIE. As per board policy, your first 10 posts are "moderated" and so there is a delay. It is an inconvenience but it is not a bad policy in my view.

I have programmed a D8748H once, and then only to see if I could read it, change it, and write it back and verify that the new data was written see here). I used my Willem 50B and Version 0.98D12a. I also used a "new" adapter. It worked.

Here are the 2 links for the mod that was performed on the daughter board in order to program D8748H. This is what i followed. I am not able to read any data or write into it. I must be overlooking something. Any help would be appreciated.


 
hmmm Before you go nuts banging your head, can you test the 8748. At a minimum, hook it up (maybe with a minimal reset) and measure the current. I had a bad 8048 that I tried to read many times and it was always all zero and when I looked at the chip in a simple circuit (regardless of the state of ea) it was drawing way more current that working ones - over 200 mA compared to 40 ma with a good one flashing an LED.
Also, I have an 8748 that I simply can not erase, after many minutes (~45 in 15 min intervals) under the UV eraser. That chip (with EA tied) does work but the eprom is shot, as far as I can see.

IOW you have a known working Willem (because you programmed an eprom chip). You don't know if your 8748 / the adapter / the settings are good. I'm trying to see what you can test easily.
 
I just want to add that I have about 10 of the D8748H chips and 3 of them I have tried to read and write to with no success using the Willem. They do erase with a UV eraser. I will test the D8748H and update what I read for the current draw.
 
In one of those two postings modem7 says to use 5.6 V vs a 5.0 volt setting. And the 1M resistor with 5000pF cap in
parallel to the resistor.

Seems there some sort of problem getting Vpp to 21Volts.

If you go into test mode without the IC installed, and verify that you are getting 21 VDC on
the programming pin? Your Power supply is 12 VDC at how many amps capability?

Yes the 21 VDC without the IC was verified. The 12 VDC external power supply has 1.2A capability. I am using 4700pF cap but I do not believe that would be the issue as i saw on the other thread that they were able to program the chip successfully. I do notice that there is some sort of problem getting Vpp to 21V when programming the IC. I will perform the current test as soon as I am able. I also found a schematic online for the Willem just for reference.

It might be possible that you somehow have corrupted that IC. You might try erasing it again and
then just read it to see if you get all 0xFF values. then pick some lower address such as 0x100
and see if you can program it as 0x00. If you have success then try programing 16 bytes at 0x200.

Or try a different IC.

Hi Guys, I am working with EENEWBIE.
so Larry we have currently 3 chips 2 empty and 1 non empty, we have another different programmer that can only read 8748, so the microcontroller are not bad.
Interesting when empty it show 0x0 not 0xf, also the willem expects it to be zero too since we run the is chip empty test it passes since it reads zeros all the time

that CPU. The Vea (Pin 7) also has to be 18 DC Volts for Programming. Also Vcc (Pin 40) is 5.0 DC Volts with
Vdd (Pin 26) being 21 DC Volts.

What exact Pin did you get 21 VDC on? If you try programming, I wonder if you can see a 18 Volts on the Vea (Pin 7),
as it will be a short spike to 18 during programming? Same for Vpp (Pin 25) should be 18VDC.

The 21 VDC was measured from pin 26 the VDD. When programming, this drops to ~18/19V, also when measuring PROG pin 25, the voltage is supposed to reach 18V however only 16.2V max is reached. The Vea seems to always be at ~18V. Programming is not successful and just gives error. Tried 3 different chips and all end in the same result. In test mode, without the IC, seems like all the voltages are supplied properly. Only when programming the chip we run into this problem of voltage dropping.
 
In looking at your "Mod for daughter board mcs48", are you 100% sure the SMD Cap is installed
correctly in parallel with the Resistor? Pin 20 is jumpered to Pin 25 with a resistor of xx OMS. In
the Photo the cap appears to be shorted with solder. Can you replace it with a standard cap and try
that.

I wish I knew where my Willem was packed, and had an adapter, as I could try my Programmer. But, I'm
getting ready to head for Sun City for the Winter Months.

It is installed correctly, it is a 1M resistor. However, i will order a standard cap to replace it just in case.
 
I have installed the new resistor and capacitor and i am still running into the same issue. Unfortunately, i believe it is a faulty daughterboard. Dont know what else it could be. Multiple chips keep giving me the buffer error and wont start the programming, as well as only reading zeros in the buffer.
