History of the GPU

I was less than impressed by the article when it trumpeted the AI (Adapter Interface) in the Mach series without mentioning the IBM 8514 where it originated.

I added an 8800 GTX to my collection recently which I think was the start of GPU.

Think that title belongs to the GeForce 256, at least according to another TECHSPOT article about 3Dfx.
“…Nvidia returned fire that summer (1999) with the GeForce 256, which it billed as the world’s first GPU (graphics processing unit)…”

So if you want to ditch that 8800 GTX, I’d be first in line! ;)

The Geforce 256 was the first with T&L in hardware nothing more and nothing programmable.
