How many PCs does it take to install an old game?

I wanted to play one of my favorite games.

No problem! Use the tweener to put the ISO on the CF card, boot the retro system. That's 2 PCs.

But wait! That ISO is corrupt. No problem, let me download a new one. The Tweener doesn't go online, so I'll use my main workstation.

That's 3.

Ok, got the new file - crap, its a bin/cue and for some reason CDburnXP can't write that. No problem, let me boot up that old Windows XP machine with Nero!

4 computers later, the game is finally installed...

Perhaps frustrating in the moment, but isn't it nice when there's a series of complications that nicely justify the practicality of having all of this lovely technology?

Makes me think of times I ssh like 4 levels deep to get from the outside world to my network to the right computer to a VM I have sitting on that computer. All so I can "quickly" see if iconv(1) behaves the way I hope it does on illumos.

I never had issues moving the files or making the disks, just digging out the correct machine and finding some place to set it up.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. "No, dear, I do need all of these computers, see?"

I should probably add that after going to all that hassle I discovered the original game disks in an easy to get to spot.

Up next: how many home theater PCs does it take to play a 4k movie. So far we're up to 3.
