Hi all,

Recently an HP1000F with missing parts but a nice front panel went up for sale on eBay, not wanting to miss a machine that I had been after for some time, I took the opportunity and bought it, for probably too much money.

It’s in very nice shape overall, and looks like it came from a lab environment, however the power supply and memory subsystem was removed and the rest of the machine was sold on at some point.

I haven’t done a ton of work yet with it, but I did discover an FPS AP-120B interface on eBay, so I would like to restore the machine to the point where it may be useful as a host machine.

I either need to build a new power supply or replace it with an old one. I have been looking into a meanwell replacement but I’m unsure about supply sequence requirements and the power supply manual from HP only serves to confuse me more. Perhaps a very detailed reading is required. This so far has been the major issue with restoration.

I did write an assembler for the machine, in Python, which worked well enough to match machine code I found on the internet, but I would like to port this to something more sensible such as rust or go, now that the program flow to generate code has been figured out.

The architecture here is very cool, it, like the DG Eclipses of the same era, has its roots in 1960s designs. It has a very simple RISCesque architecture. Of course by the time the 1000 was announced, the architecture had been extended substantially and it was quite capable for the time and purpose.

If anyone has a spare power supply, I’d be happy to chat about taking it off your hands for a fair price. As for memory, I'm fairly certain I have a good plan to get more, and most of the requisite parts.

They do show up on eBay from time-to-time. IMO it's worth waiting for another one to turn up rather than trying to Frankenstein a replacement.

The FPP unit is modestly scarce; I think that one (complete) showed up on eBay a few years back.

The memory subsystem is readily available as individual PCAs. Note that it's not completely mix-n-match; the possible arrangements are these:

HP 2102B Standard Performance Memory Controller
- HP 12994A 8K byte ( 4K word) Memory Module
- HP 12998A 16K byte ( 8K word) Memory Module
- HP 13187A/B 32K byte {16K word) Memory Module
- HP 12746A 64K byte (32K word) Memory Module
- HP 12747A 128K byte (64K word) Memory Module

HP 2102C Standard Performance Fault Control Memory Controller
- HP 12779A 256K byte (128K word) Check Bit Array
- HP 12780A 512K byte (256K word) Check Bit Array

HP 2102E High Performance Memory Controller
- HP 12741A 32K byte ( 16K word) High Performance Memory Module
- HP 12746H 64K byte ( 32K word) High Performance Memory Module
- HP 12747H 128K byte ( 64K word) High Performance Memory Module
- HP 12799H 256K byte (128K word) High Performance Memory Module
- HP 12749H 512K byte (256K word) High Performance Memory Module

HP 2102H High Performance Fault Control Memory Controller
- HP 12779H 256K byte (128K word) High Performance Check Bit Array
- HP 12780H 512K byte (256K word) High Performance Check Bit Array
- HP 12666H 1M byte (512K word) High Performance Check Bit Array

If the picture in reply #2 is of the HP 2117F in question with all of the wires in the main power supply Crossover Cable Assembly terminating in the 12-pin Molex connector, then the appropriate power supply should be a "B" model 5061-1356 or 5061-3476.

The newer 5061-6615 versions changed the connection point of some of the supply wires from the Molex connector to a terminal block connector, which was added starting with the 5061-6615 versions.

(I haven't been able to find any current Molex parts which match that 12-pin connector. Maybe it has been obsolete for a long time).

Is this the 2117F you acquired?

Did you also acquire the companion FPP box?

Any luck acquiring the missing power supply yet?

Any luck acquiring the missing Memory Controller, Memory Module, Memory Expansion Module, Memory Protect, and DCPC boards yet?

This is the same machine from the listing! I have probably 80% of the memory subsystem and I'm very close to a complete machine once a power supply shows up! I bought the companion box as well at the same time. I've got DCPC, Mem protect, Mem Expansion and the Mem Controller. I need to get the actual Memory boards still.

No luck on the missing power supply. I have been regularly checking ebay in the meantime.
