IBM and the Blond

The Retrofuture Vault is solely AI production. There is an affiliated Vault of the Atomic Space Age which has actual photos and predictive artwork done at the time. Some of the real items are too implausible for AI to achieve. The following is what real marketing looked like.

Not too shabby either. The blond not the tape deck.

Ah, the legendary IBM -130. Famous for having 32 words of RAM and sixty-five thousand registers, plus a memory comprising a rotating carousel of magnetic head arrays spinning past a stationary strip of ferromagnetic material. Visitors to -130 installations were encouraged to take a turn holding down the Emergency Keep Going button so that the technician who normally had to do that all day could take a loo break.

Stan Kelly-Bootle wrote a fair bit about this computer in his "The Devils DP-Dictionary", in particular about the team behind it and the printer technology.

PS: That is a book all vintage computer lovers should have on their shelf.

I kind of miss the era of bad photoshop jobs being the handcrafted work of greasy basement dwelling nerds. Sure, they also emitted a lot of toxic emissions and noise pollution, but at least they had heart, dammit.

the Lieberman Ultimate PC where the press photo had the screen of a PDA shopped into the front?

If I dig REALLY deep into my folder of old 2000's memes I'm sure I got some other gems but I'm sure a lot of that stuff had references that aged like milk.

I fondly remember that period as the time where any wag could apply a little editing magic to a photo of a chrome garbage can or old-fashioned microphone and convince Apple fanatics it was a top secret leak of what the next PowerPC desktop computer would look like. The Cube *seriously* broke people's brains for a while.

(Which made it all the funnier when Apple finally actually released the "garbage can" Mac Pro in 2013. Although in all fairness it's not really a garbage can, it's more like a Dyson air purifier.)
