The NEC uPD765/Intel 8272 is a floppydisk microcontroller used in the first generation of IBM PC and XT floppy disk adapters. This chip controlls general R/W operation from the host computer to a single or double density floppy disk drive. It's capable of doing either MFM or FM encoding, and automatic error/status-checking.
