DECnet-VAX V1.3 software (used with VMS V2.0 and V2.1) has been rediscovered.
This is very early DECnet Phase II using DMC11 for point-to-point connections.
NCP is working, but there are still some problems left to be solved.

Has anyone got one or more of the following DECnet V1.3 manuals available?

- AA-H165A-TE DECnet-VAX Release Notes
- AD-D901A-T1 DECnet-VAX System User's Guide Update Notice #1
- AA-D901A-TE DECnet-VAX System User's Guide
- AA-D902A-TE DECnet-VAX System Manager's Guide
- AD-D902A-T1 DECnet-VAX System Manager's Guide Update Notice #1

Anyone still knowing how to set up and start DECnet V1.x?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Regards,

Ulli

P.S.
The manuals are still very important, so please have a look at your collection!

... by the way: I can supply a lot more "ancient" software for the big old VAXen, for real ones and for simh as well, just ask!

Interesting! I have an 11/730. I have it up and running, but I haven't worked out how to get software on and off of it yet. It has an ethernet card, but I have not succeeded in getting it talking to my modern machines yet. Another option I've considered is coming up with some way for my modern machines to read/write 9-track tape.

Suggestion:
Make your PC talk DECnet using Linux, e.g. Debian "Jessie" with packages: dnet-progs, dnet-common and libdnet (there may be other Linux-distros offering DECnet, too). Works perfectly!

As soon as you can push and pull data to/from your VAX this way you can install TCP/IP Services (formerly known as "UCX") on your VAX and make it talk TCP/IP as well.

By the way: Which type of 9-track tape drive have you got with your 11/730, which Ethernet card (DEUNA/DELUA) and how much memory does it have?

P.S.
Of course you'll need some hardware, too: A transceiver (TP at best) and an AUI cable.

See the project page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-decnet/

My PC is a Mac. I presume that running Linux under a VM won't help me, since DECnet requires changing the MAC address, something that I don't think is supported by the virtual networking interfaces in VMware.

The OpenVMS installation presently on my VAX's hard drive seems to respond without complaints when I try to set up TCP/IP networking, so I presume that the IP code is present. I just haven't gotten it to respond to pings or anything yet. The functional status of my ethernet card, transceiver, AUI cable, bulkhead panel and somewhat-mangled bulkhead interconnect cable are still unknown quantities, and I haven't spent more than a couple hours working on that stuff so far.

My tape drive is a TU80. I've run backups of the R80 (with OpenVMS installed; 7.3 if I recall correctly) and RL02 pack (with VMS 5.3 installed, IIRC).

I don't recall off the top of my head which ethernet card and how much RAM I have, and I'm not near the machine at the moment to look. This darned day job sure gets in the way of my fun! :)
