Yes, my board just rewires the cable. You can do the exact same thing with a hand wired custom cable. My board is just a convenience, while the FDADAP performs an electronic function that many 8" drives need but 34 pin interfaces don't provide.

FWIW my Shugart 801 works with a hand wired cable and a PC, so I can read / write images easily. I also have an 851 but have not yet attempted to connect it to the PC. I expect it will work, though.
