Weird. The picture of the KDJ11-B do not have an FPA installed. You can see the socket, but it's empty.
Did you pick a picture from somewhere else, or did you remove that chip before the photo?

Apart from that, nice. How stable is it?
 
The photo was taken before the purchased FPA arrived, but after I replaced the 15,206 МНz (yes, it was M8190-AB board) quartz with a 20 MHz quartz.

The log was recorded in the current configuration and it can be seen from it that the clock frequency is almost 24 MHz and the FPA is present

But I can take new photos - in current configuration

Very stable - to evaluate the performance, I made a complete RSX-11M-Plus Sysgen several times.

All my J-11 -09 processors run at 20 MHz, but not all run at 24 MHz.
 
How stable is it?
That'll be the interesting question. The 2 gate arrays were twitchy even with a 20 MHz crystal (5MHz clock) - I had to try quite a few boards before I found one that would run reliably. But that was with earlier boards and J-11 chips - all DCJ11-AE are at least rev 1 on the DC334 and rev 11 on the DC335, but the masks continued to evolve without changing the DCJ11 suffix - the last ones I've seen were rev 4 on the DC334 and rev 16 on the DC335, with a 9820 module date code and a Harris Semiconductor logo on the ceramic carrier instead of the usual DIGITAL. Based on the date, that was likely one of the last J-11 chips produced.

Presumably similar things went on with the support gate arrays. One of the first things to fail reliably at higher clock speeds during my tests was PMI memory.

I have theorized in the past that needing to at least re-spin (and possibly redesign) those gate arrays was one of the reasons DEC was less vocal about Harris not meeting the original speed goal. Of course, just because DEC used gate arrays that couldn't keep up doesn't mean that other CPU boards had the same limitations - the Nissho 11/24 upgrade didn't use them, and neither the the 11/93-94 CPU board from ROI.

Hmm. Maybe something I should experiment with one of these days on one of my KDJ11-E boards.

I have a pair of KDJ11-A (М8192 and M8192-YB) and I decided to see if it would be possible to change quartz for M8192-YB, from the standard 15.206 MHz to 24 MHz. With changing the processor of course.

To my slight surprise, the board are starting, but speed tests were surprising.

All are same, only the quartz and the processor were changed. All results are operations per second. Mark "emp" (empty) - block for calculating the impact of overhead costs.

As I have posted here before, I once upgraded an 11/83 to 22.1184 MHz, and it passed all diagnostics, etc. That particular board would talk to the console but would not boot successfully at 24 MHz.

I ran my own KDJ11-B 11/73 at 18 MHz for years with no troubles. I don't remember trying to go faster on that board, but maybe I did...

The obvious question is how you deal with the fact that any RK11 controller only knows about 18-bit DMA addressing, while a Qbus have 22 bits. Did you do any changes to the driver to use a bounce buffer, or did you change/extend the controller to do 22-bit DMA addressing, and corresponding changes to the RK driver, or is it just running, and things work as long as you don't actually do DMA to addresses above 18 bits?
 
I chose the easiest way - made Unibus Mappging registers. A little later there will be a log from the RSX.

Interesting. So I assume they work the same as on a Unibus machine. Then you just need to make sure the DK driver is aware that it should use these, and you should be good. And I expect that shouldn't be too hard, since the DK will always use the Unibus map if a larger address space exists, since the controller only normally exists for Unibus.
But you also don't want the Unibus map used for proper Qbus devices, which can directly do the 22-bit addressing.
For some controllers, like MSCP and RL, this might get a bit exciting, as the same drivers normally are used on both type of systems.

For RL11, I implemented a variant of the RLV211 controller (QBus) - the standard drivers themselves choose the correct option. I don’t plan to implement MSCP yet, so I don’t know how it will be there. The RH70 controller will also be emulated. Later :)
 
Interesting. So I assume they work the same as on a Unibus machine. Then you just need to make sure the DK driver is aware that it should use these, and you should be good. And I expect that shouldn't be too hard, since the DK will always use the Unibus map if a larger address space exists, since the controller only normally exists for Unibus.
But you also don't want the Unibus map used for proper Qbus devices, which can directly do the 22-bit addressing.
For some controllers, like MSCP and RL, this might get a bit exciting, as the same drivers normally are used on both type of systems.

As far as I know RSX-11M Plus (starting from Version 2.1) checks if the machine has unibus mapping registers and then uses UMR for controllers that normally support only 18-bit. Even on Q-Bus machines. And a nice side effect of Version 2.1 is that when they encounter a RH controller with a Massbus Address Extension then they deactivate the UMR for RH controllers and use 22-bit addressing, so you could use a "RH70" on a Q-Bus machine (e.g. the Emulex SC03 ESDI Controller).
 
And since all this is implemented in one FPGA chip, addresses are broadcast only for UNIBUS controllers :)

How do you activate the mapping? Normally you would need the /MAP output of the DCJ11 which is Bit 5 of MMR3?
